I was confused why this recruit wasn't responding normally when I tried to pull him away from the sim. Then I noticed the sim is a D2. I am D3; I guess my higher prestige meant the player who was on my D3 list was also on simmy's D2 list. Anyway I have a bit of an investment now and nothing to show. Has anyone ever pushed a D2 sim off a player with a D3 team? the player isn't rude, he leaves the door open and says things like 'you have a lot more selling to do', but he does accept my visits. OTOH the WOTS says they are 'very tight'. do I have a chance here, or is this a lost cause?

The only factor that matters is that the sim is very tight. That means stay away. WOTS has the be the first thing you check whenever you want to battle a sim.

If the message was a low level message it would be extremely easy to take the player away. D2 vs D3 is almost entirely irrelevant.
