A recruit scorned? Topic

I was 120 APs into a player and he was "Moderate" on me and not considering any other schools in session 2. Then I told him I'd redshirt him, and all unlocks dropped to zero and his interest fell to "very low". I took back the redshirt and dropped another 130 APs on him, but he didn't budge.

He didn't have a "wants to play" preference, which is why I thought the RS would be safe. Is this just how it goes sometimes with informing people of redshirts? I've only redshirted 2 players before, and the RS offer in recruiting knocked interest back a bit but not to zero; I just had to work harder to get them up to VH.

Same happened to a user in our conference. And didn't happen to another.

I've only used inform of RS once in 3.0 and it didn't really have any impact. I was the only one on him and I don't even recall if my interest level dropped. I sent only AP and maybe a CV, so not a ton of effort. He was a Juco too.

Weird. I guess it's just a random variable with some recruits.

Some additional context - I'm a D3 team and the recruit is projected D1. I'm wondering if it's that, or just that I informed of the RS too soon, or just a random variable. Either way, I'm scrambling with my last scholarship on the last day of recruiting now, hoping for a recruit to fall in love with the program quickly.

i think being D3 for a DI recruit is key

in 2.0, the inform of redshirt button seemed to cause more of a hit when a player was a reach

seems similar

IMO, the only reason to tell a recruit you're going to redshirt him is if you have already offered him a scholarship, but maybe a better option has fallen into your lap, and you don't want him to sign. Most of the time, you'll be able to redshirt him fine once he gets to campus. And if you're just going to go back on the redshirt anyway, why not wait until he's signed?

For the record, I'm fairly sure this kind of thing happened occasionally in the previous version as well. I remember a couple times where a recruit reacted very strongly to the idea of a redshirt, and I was unable to get him back on board. I suspect that's why a lot of people recommend against informing of a redshirt in all cases.

Yeah, that makes sense. I just felt safe because I was the only option, and I wanted to make sure his WE didn't drop. Even now, the player isn't considering any teams.

"Most of the time, you'll be able to redshirt him fine once he gets to campus."

This was not my experience in the beta. If I didn't warn during recruiting, my recruits reacted badly 2 times in 2 tries.

Or if you want to RS a Juco. It's unlikely they'll take it without the inform.

I haven't had any problems with redshirting any un-informed freshmen (in beta, or live), but I did inform a juco, out of this kind of concern. Obviously no way to know if he would have accepted without the inform. And of note, I wasn't going to recruit him unless he was willing to redshirt; to me, that's an important distinction. I do assume jucos are a little less likely to accept them, because they may not be on the lower end of OVR on the roster, and upperclassmen generally demand a little more pt anyway. I don't know it's true, but it makes conceptual sense. But then the question is, are they also more likely to bail when you inform during recruiting?

I go back to the rule of thumb, if I would remove the redshirt once he's on my team if he lost significant WE, then I'm not going to inform him. The only guys I would consider informing are guys I don't want on my roster *unless they redshirt*.

Wish I would have gone with that rule. That's probably what I'll do moving forward.

I've never had a problem redshirting a freshman. Only when it's a sophomore or higher. That's why I only inform jucos.

I was able to RS a D2 juco prospect to a D3 school with over 380 AP and no other effort. I think I had 300 AP on him before I informed of RS and then did a little extra just to keep him happy. I am using that as a baseline rule of thumb. Not sure with D1 to D3 juco. Still working on an example of that for a D1 juco to D3.
