George Wright Texas Ranger Topic

Yeah I know, George who?
This is a non-event, I just wanted to post about the fact that I finally decided to break in 1983 George Wright. He's never been drafted in an OL yet and I've been tempted to draft him for years but always backed off since you can easily find that same talent for a lot cheaper or better talent for his 5.5 mil price tag.
So who is George Wright anyway? If you weren't around the early 80's or even blinked you probably don't have a clue. Well he's kinda like poorman's Mitchell Page but instead of a great rookie season and fade away he had a promissing 2nd season and then faded to black, or to the Expos...
Yeah I know still nothing exciting and I'm even wondering why I'm bothering to type this post, I guess for me it's an event after all!
Oh well, George didn't even have impressing numbers as a minor leaguer but he did show a promissing complete package, good speed though not really a base stealer, fine defensive player with good range, glove and arm, switch hitter that could hit the ball well with some power and after his '83 season there were many who started to believe in his natural skills.
Well that was it, for some reason he lost his magic touch the next few seasons and the world forgot all about him, except this baseball fan who was just a kid who had been impressed by his play at Arlington Stadium back in the days.
So there it is, I finally drafted him and even named my team after him, and to give him the best chance to shine in his WIS OL debut I gave him home Coors advantage!

Go George Go!

News Flash!!
George Wright Texas Ranger wins the World Series!!

Yeah I know, this post had been viewed 73 times and gotten zero comments confirming my expectations that nobody was going to care but since my mother always told me to finish what I start... here I am again.

George and the boys got me a ring!!

I never actually expected that could happen since I had never won at Coors. I rarely use Coors actually but once in a while I feel like going wild and try something weird with it but had never gotten to the WS before although I had had some decent seasons.
Ok so here are George's stats
162 674 91 209 26 9 10 124 30 70 4 3 .310 .338 .420 0.758
RF 162 162 1,438.3 5 0 276 9 0 26 0 .983

Good but not great considering he played half the games at Coors, note that he barely managed to get half his actual HR total but thanks to the dominance of deadballers same happened to my '84 Schmidt and '02 Guerrero.
His D numbers were pretty impressive with 26+ plays, 9 assists for only 5 errors, he did win the GG at RF.
He was even better in the playoffs but so was pretty much the entire team, here's the stat line.
14 59 11 21 2 0 1 13 2 3 0 0 .356 .354 .441 0.795

Alright this concludes the first and only chapter in the WIS career of Mister George Wright, I will very probably try him in a more 'normal' ballpark in the future but this season was a lot of fun.

I certainly recall George Wright back in the day when he was a shiny new penny in the MLB. In fact, I recall he was one of the two or three players from the 1983 Topps set that I purchased an "investment lot" of baseball cards then. I have no idea what I paid and the cards are long gone (probably burned for heat in the fireplace before we switched to a gas insert). Should have bought Microsoft shares instead. Anyhow, I agree, he's really overpriced for an OL, but congrats on the WS win and for stepping up to use a guy from your youth. Part of the fun in SIM.

Thanks redwingscup!
Nothing like those early baseball memories. You never forget your first baseball loves, all those players that gave you your first thrills. For me they're like mythology, still alive somewhere in my own baseball Olympus. That's why I'm playing WIS, I like drafting my favorite baseball semi-gods from the late 70's and 80's.
