I love how you can be national coach of the year, but not conference coach of the year in WIS

National COY is based on overall body of work where CCOY is based more on improvement from one season to the next. A team that was 1-15 in conf play last season and goes 14-2 the following year will beat out a a 16-0 coach for CCOY every time. I'm not saying it makes sense but it's how their algorithm works.

also, there are some coaches who win NCoY way more often than NCs.
others are the other way around.

could be just within that sample size stuff is gonna happen

or could indicate that NC winners spend less time gameplanning during the year, but are excepetional gameplanners when it counts

the other thought i have had is maybe gpa is factored in. clearly there are some coaches who ride a fine line and are able to keep practice minutes low while others play it safe

maybe its nothing.

best example is coachtilden at UCLA-iba.

he is great D1 coach, and had established himself as such by season 65. having already won an NC and three NCoY.

then, from 66 to 85 he went on a 20 year stretch where he won the NCoY 16 times! AND, during those 20 years never won the NC!!!

overall, 19 NCoY and 2 NCs.

i checked a few years for GPA, its definitely very good... almost no one below 3.0 and average might be 3.4 but not sure if that explains anything

hmmm checked Stewdog at Georgia Tech- Iba... hes got 9 NCs and 4 NCoY... and his GPA seem just as good if not better
