I could of swore I heard someone say that the PBP was only cosmetic to get an end result of a score. Someone else is telling me different. Anyone weigh in on this with some knowledge?

PBP cosmetic
Stats = actual SIM engine.
If that makes any sense.

Yeah, this was exactly the way I understood it.

Oh damn actually? I had heard pbp was not cosmetic!

I don’t know if everyone means the same thing when they say cosmetic. Shots are taken from certain spots on the floor, by certain players. Those things aren’t “cosmetic”, ie superficial or meaningless. They are cosmetic in that it doesn’t matter if it was a finger roll, or a post up, doesn’t matter if the 3 was taken from straight away, or the corner, etc. Possessions go through a type of event tree to determine if the possession ends in a FG, a turnover, a foul, or a defensive rebound. The specific events described in the pbp could be considered “cosmetic”, in that the only thing that really matters is the outcome.

Yeah, pbp reveals the type of shot: post shot, mid range or 3 point shot.

Yea I certainly don't think pbp is cosmetic. Aspects of it may be, but there is definitely useful information there.

I have yet to be fully convinced there is a separate "mid-range" category. Do you have tangible evidence (statistical analysis, ticket response, etc) that suggests otherwise?

Seems there has to be something between a 3 and a LP play or else how would guys with mid per and very low lp score.

Not only that, there are lots of points in any given box score that are neither: 3 point field goals; points in the paint; free throws. The shots definitely exist. What makes a player more or less effective for those shots is up for interpretation.

ETA - I don’t know how to explain a player like this efficiently scoring 12+ points per game, if mid range shots don’t have a formula apart from 3 pt shots and PIP shots.

Agree with shoe. His guy was making 4-5 FTs every night. That might help to explain his 12 PPG despite is avg to below avg LP/PE. He probably had more than his share of "and one" plays too.

But he shot 53%.
