Sign extension AFTER arbitration Topic

There is this one owner who drives me crazy (cuz I lose to him constantly). In looking at the way he does things, he arbitrates players he wants to keep twice, but has them sign a contract extension in the few minutes after he arbs them. Since the player wouldn’t be a free agent until after the 3rd arbitration (and he wouldn’t re-sign at that point anyway), I’m wondering HOW he signs someone to an extension. I suspect I know why, but physically how.

Open the "negotiate long term screen in another tab. Arb him and then go to the other tab and sign him long term.

You don't need to open another screen. Immediately when you arb the guy the second time, the Results page has a Long Term Extension embedded in the paragraph above the arb results. Use that link to go to a long-term extension screen, and you get the current season at second-arb value, with the extension kicking in next season.
The player's card will show the second arb and the LT extension as being completed on the same date.

Thanks. Guess I've never noticed and have always been overly precautious.

What is the success rate of doing the LT Ext immediately after doing a 3rd arb? If it's someone I absolutely want to sign, should I not even take the risk of the 3rd Arb + LT and just skip arb and sign the extension?
I planned on doing the LT ext after 2nd Arb as discussed in this thread but by the time I had a chance to sit down and do it sim had processed the arb cases automatically.

If you intend to keep the player, don't 3rd arb.

I've only ever had one player open to re-signing after 3rd arb, and that player had 98 Patience.

I 3rd arb'ed another player recently with "only" 96 Patience (I didn't want to keep him at his LT demand), and when I hit the LT link after the arb, he said "After taking me to arbitration three times, I'd rather play for another team that appreciates my services" or however it goes.

Thanks, I think I would lose my you know what if I lost this guy to FA trying to take him to 3rd Arb and then LT Ext and it back fired!

No messin' around with that guy. Budget $10+M for him the next five years, I would LT him first chance you can next season, don't wait for arb day, I think you can do it the day after budgets. If he goes to free agency he gets a max deal.

You have to open the LT link BEFORE you offer arb3. Once both windows are open in separate tabs, submit your arb3 offer, then click over to the LT window and submit your LT offer. I've done it a handful of times (with high and low patience players) and it has yet to fail.

Oh wait... I get it now... you do this if you fully intend to submit the third arb no matter what...

so by having the LT window already open, it doesn't matter what the player says after the third arb, you get to ignore his "Free agency here I come!" Izzat it?

FWIW, I still wouldn't take any chance with that SP mtanton's got.

Nick seems to have success with that strategy, but I have never tried it and would be very nervous about it if it was one of my franchise players. Like damag said, no messin around. If it's someone you don't want to lose, sign the guy to a long term contract before you arb the third time. Or if you sign him to a LT contract before the 2nd arb, you can probably lock him in cheaper.

Thanks, guys, for the thoughtful answers

Here's one example I can remember: Player Profile: Turk Morla - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports

Signed arb3 AND a contract extension on 2/3/18 at 9:21 p.m.

I've only tried it a handful of times, so the sample size is small. But it's worked every time so far.

Here's another guy with 63 patience: Player Profile: Doc Stoops - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports

Signed arb3 AND a contract extension on 6/12/18 at 7:03 a.m.
