League Average Sta/Dur Topic

What would you guys say the league average stamina/durability is for

(a) Starting Pitcher
(b) Long Relief/Mop-up
(c) True short reliever (Setup, Closer, Specialist)

and how many innings would you expect the league average for each other these to be able to pitch at close to maximum effectiveness, assuming a 5 man rotation and no injuries

Thanks so much for the time!

I don't mean JUST a pure closer. I'm thinking I'll put my best relief pitcher in the closer role, uncheck the "only use closer in save situations" box, and then say he can be used in the 8th inning if need be?

The thing about simmy is that its logic uses Closer to begin their assigned inning and uses setup to relieve mid-inning whichever pitcher is currently in the game (starter or reliever).

So like in my Mike Prinz example, if I set him to target pitch none, max pitch 25, inning avail 7, call bullpen 2 or 3, then simmy keeps the starter in the game and let's him get to 6.0+ or 6.1 or 6.2, and if the starter gets into trouble in the 7th simmy lets Prinz inherit the runners. What you can also do in this situation is stack a righty and a lefty (such as Fernando Colon on my Texas team, link not working) with the same settings so that simmy formulaically chooses who is better for the following plate appearance.

If I was to set either one to Closer A instead of Setup A with the same settings, he would enter the game to start the 7th instead of to relieve within the 7th. Thus, this does not stretch the starter into an extra inning, does not allow for inherited runners, and no R/L stacking. These last two concepts are why I don't ever use specialists and why I rarely use closers. Just the way the game's logic is programmed

Also, simmy will ONLY use closer in a game that is tied (if you uncheck the box in manager settings) or when you're winning by 1-3 (or 4+ if a multi-runner save situation arises). It will not use a closer in some kind of top of the 9th situation where you're down by 1-3 and need to "maintain the deficit". Simmy will only use Setup (or LR) for this role

This is why true closers almost always have sub-.500 WL record on this game, because 100% of their appearances are at-risk for L and only like 25% of their appearances are eligible for win (tie-game holds, blown saves where you score in the following half). Kondou's career WL is 33-25 in 525+ appearances and that's a ridiculously low loss-rate. And it's why Prinz is 97-54 in a setup role because he gets credited for all the wins in come-from-behind games

For "LH/RH specialist", instead of using the actual drop-down designation you can artificially create the role using settings

Lets say I wanted to use Player Profile: Addison Rijo as "RH specialist", I would make him SUA with target PC none and Max PC 5, call bullpen 5. He will only enter as a consequence of the previous pitcher getting pulled, and simmy will evaluate the plate appearance to put him in whenever there's a RHB and will evaluate not to use him against LHB because his vL is trash. And the max PC 5 with highest call bullpen means he will almost definitely get pulled after his one plate appearance. It's possible he can face multiple RHBs if the first out was less than 5 pitches

This is awesome! Thanks so much man, you're a huge help to my HBD career

Let's assume like a 8 guy bullpen.

So I could have like LRA (long reliever who would pitch when I'm still in the game), LRB (long reliever who would pitch when LRA is tired or when I'm down like 6-2 in the 5th), Mop-up who would pitch like the 7-8-9 when I'm down 8-4 in the 7th, SUA lefty specialist (low pitch count), SUA (normal pitch count like a very good 1 inning guy), SUA (usually would put as closer, best reliever who I'll try to get lots of appearances), SUB (solid reliever), SUB (another solid reliever)

Obviously all depends on the makeup of the bullpen but would these roles make sense if I had like 1 stud, 1 good reliever, 2 solid relievers, 1 massive lefty killer, 1 solid like 50 sta 35 dur guy, and 2 not exactly very good longer guys

Yeah, you've got the basic idea.

4 starters + 2 swing starter / long relievers is plenty of coverage until the 5th or 6th inning for an entire season, and 5-6 setup/closer/specialist guys is plenty of coverage from the 6th or 7th inning until end of game for an entire season. You basically just overlap their inning available settings and Max pitch counts

Your best 4 starters + best 3 relievers will usually represent something like 90% of your team's innings and the remaining 4-5 guys sorta get the scraps, 25.0-50.0 ip each because simmy uses the best ones so disproportionately often
