WE Drop for Redshirt... How much is worth it. Topic

Just redshirted a guy and his WE dropped from 65 to 27.

I’m pretty sure the extra year of development will more than make up for the WE drop, so I think I’m going to leave it on.

Agree? Thoughts?

That's a big drop. Think of it this way, 65 times 4 for 4 years is 260 "work ethic value". 27 times 5 is 135. I'd definitely take it off if development is your only goal and not class balancing etc.
edit: this assumes also he still has a decent to large amount of potential, which I'm assuming he does or why redshirt him in the first place?

I would take it off. If he needs more development, having him at 27 WE will really hurt.

Almost certainly not worth the WE drop, in my opinion, unless he has very little room to grow in his important categories. Even if you start him 4 years straight after a redshirt, it will take him 2 solid years of starting to get his WE back up over 40. So if he has moderate or better potential, you’re looking at a much better player his 2nd-4th years than you will have his 3rd-5th years with the big WE hit.

Thanks for the input guys. I have to say I'm a little surprised with the consensus view though.

I would not have thought twice about recruiting this guy if he had a 27 WE to start with. I don't think I've ever had trouble maxing out a guy with a WE over 20 by his senior year. I've even successfully developed guys with WE in the teens several times.

Any other thoughts? I get that 65 is better than 27, but would you really worry about maxing out his cores at 27?
My guess is he would now max out mid way through year 4 instead of mid way through year 3.

I don't stray away from low WE players either. It does take some work to develop them though. My thoughts with your case here: If he needs more development - it will be hard to manage with that low WE considering he is already a sophomore. Typically when I have low WE freshman - I'll get them a few starts early in their career. Personally, I don't think the WE drop is worth it if the redshirt is simply for development - if it is to balance class structure, that's another story. I think he will develop fine if you took the shirt off of him.

The question is not really whether or not you would have recruited him with a lower work ethic, nor is the question whether or not you’ll get him to max eventually. The question is how much value is he going to add to your team, and for how many years? Unless he has very little room for growth, it is undeniable that you will have a better player on campus for seasons 1-3 with no redshirt than you would have for seasons 2-4 with a redshirt and big WE drop. How much better depends on potential in core areas. If he’s got any blue or green in important categories (and I would hope he does, otherwise he’s not really good enough to worry about either way), it’s a no-brainer.

OK, thanks again for the advice. I was going to leave the RS on just to be contrarian, but ultimately took it off.

I'd have left it on, too... depending on his potential.

sorry I didn't get here sooner.

His potential is good, lots of blue and green... he was one of the better guards I saw as a freshman, but had about 5 people on him so I went in another direction. He never signed and went juco so I cut a guy to sign him as a So.

I really wanted that 4th year, but no big deal. I had a frosh SF with a lot of room to grow, so the RS will do him good.

Still a little surprised by the responses though, If he had dropped to 35 instead of 27, I wouldn’t even have asked the question.

Well, three against and one for is not exactly a majority of HD users.

(the rest was bad info so forget it.)

Does that happen?

No. He wont transfer due to a redshirt. Not sure why he thinks that,

Hmm. Well, my memory certainly is not what it once was. I would swear that has happened to me twice (albeit both times were long ago.) Ignore my comment, then.
