I had a guy take a -22 hit in his WE when I gave him the redshirt. I've never seen this happen. Has this happened to anyone else. He wasn't promised a redshirt or anything like that either.

It happens with some guys. To my knowledge he won’t transfer. You should be good as long as you are willing to take the work ethic hit.

If you don't tell the kid he's going to redshirt, there's always a chance a WE drop could happen. You can always remove the redshirt and get the WE back, but since he's still at a 41, there's no harm to keeping it on him. He'll still reach his development max by his senior year for you.

I wonder what the math is if he has a lot of green potentials. Would an extra year (if reduced) and an extra off-season gain more than 22 points of WE? If his defense is green, I can't see it growing very fast with the lower WE. Still, 41 isn't terrible. Bear in mind this player is stupid and will take up a lot of points in study hall his first two years. A 41 WE/2.08 GPA isn't what they call a fast learner.

I would have been annoyed if that guy hadn't completely accepted the redshirt--he should have been a perfect candidate.

While we're discussing redshirts.... we've all talked about how sometimes when you use the "inform of redshirt" tool, there can be the reaction of complete removal of your school from the considering list, and all effort drops back to 0. Me personally, it's happened almost every time I've used it. Maybe it's because I aim high regarding talent. (Maybe it's, dare I say it..... random!). Who knows.

But i've tried a new method more often lately and 4 straight times it has worked. I target only Early or EoP1 signers as a D2 coach. I will get a player lined up to sign on the first cycle of RS2. No real threats from other schools. (The 4 recruits were all different seasons and teams, had different amounts of effort on them, and two of them had "wants to play" preference).

So when RS2 begins, I'll set up a few APs and I will "inform of redshirt". I know he's either signing that cycle with me, or he's going to bail on me completely. But all 4 times they've signed and accepted the redshirt on that first signing cycle.

I'll continue to try this and give updates when it applies. But is this a crafty lil trick? Too small of a sample size to confirm? Thoughts anyone?

Edit.... two things to add to this 1) i've done this successfully on the last cycle of RS2 as well. In a situation where no schools offered a scholarship, and I was only at low with an offer, and "inform to redshirt", and the player chose me because he had no other offers. And 2) because of (1), my point is based around using the inform of redshirt on a cycle that a player is SURE to sign on. So a D3 could do this same thing if they led on an early signer, the very first cycle the player could sign at the D3 school. I just don't know if it's 100% thing. Or if I'm on a good stretch. Anybody else try this before? Success or failure?

I'm surprised no one has touched on this. But I'll refresh it with a second question that's unrelated.....

If I run zone (or any set. But zone is the obvious one here) and I redshirt a player.... and I also don't play a freshman all season long, would he lose a year of eligibility? Or would he be a (likely unhappy) freshman the following season?

The freshman that is not explicitly redshirted will return as a sophomore the following season whether he plays a minute or not.
