Long Term Contract Negotiations Topic

Years ago there was a thread on what you could expect a player to take on a LT extension. What you could offer and how much you could vary from his demands in order to get the deal done.
Anyone remember that thread or point me to that type of information.

I don't know about pre determining what his asking price might be (I assume it would correlate to his OVR), but there is no "varying from his demands"

The only exception is you can structure the contract any way you want (within reason and following guidelines spelled out in the help section of the negotiation window). If a guy is asking for 7.5M X 4 seasons then your contract offer must meet that total dollar value (30M). If you wanted to sign him for 5 seasons you'd have to increase to 37.5M total value. You can offer a signing bonus which comes out of the first season and reduce the rest of the $ per season.

So for example you offer a 10M bonus, and then offer 5M per season for 4 seasons. 5M X 4 seasons = 20M plus the 10M bonus is 30M, which meets his demands. Your salary cap hit for the first year would be 15M then 5 for the next three.

Thanks, but I believe you could structure a deal with minor variations (10% either way) for different years of the agreement. Something like a player asking 4x10 may sign for 1st - 9.5, 2nd - 9.5, 3rd - 10 and 4th 11.

These variation limits are listed in the help for the negotiations page with any player. Copied from there:

"In a two-year contract, neither season can comprise more than 60% of the total value of the contract. In a three-year contract, no season can comprise more than 40% of the total value of the contract. In a four-year contract, no season can comprise more than 30% of the total value of the contract. In a five-year contract, no season can comprise more than 25% or less than 10% of the total value of the contract."

That contract you use as an example meets his demands of 40M over 4 seasons.

Using the help section copied and pasted by dedelman above you can see that it can widely vary depending on contract length so long as the total value is still achieved.
