First off, Jt's catcher strategy is brutal. Even though Rick handed me a crapfest, so glad I don't have the headache of a bunch of guys with shin guards all over the field!
I built each team one piece at a time (together) and the last 2-3 spots took forever. Using the super expensive 3-5 player strategy was what I decided on from the start. Settled on '21 Ruth, '05 Randy Winn, and '96 Ken Caminiti on the offensive side. '86 Cesar Cedeno and '53 Ted Williams were also in my original plans, but couldn't make them work on my good team.
Here is the bad team:
OFFENSE
C - '72 McCarver, '05 I Rodriguez Together only 586 PA with a combined line of .239, .305, .334 and cost almost 5M.
1B - '21 Ruth $26M+ was all I needed to know. '93 George Brett, a full time DH and .268 avg, will likely play here when Ruth is forced to the OF.
2B - '81 Tom Herr Almost $6.4M for a line of .268, 329, .345. Yes, his defense is A/A, but more about that later.
3B - '96 Caminiti...solid all around, but hoping normalization will cut back on those 40 HR. Almost $9M.
SS - '84 Ozzie Smith Yes, his defense is amazing, but a weak bat with only 484 PA. A couple of no hitting duds back up.
OF - '70 Larry Hisle 471 PA .205, .299, .353 C+/B defense.
OF - '87 Gary Pettis 444 PA .208, .302, .259 C+/A+
OF - '51 Mickey Mantle 467 PA .267, .349, .443 D/D-
OF - '05 Randy Winn .359, .391, .680 A/A+ A definite superstar, but with only 247 PA
With a total 1629 PA to go around, Ruth moves in here when needed, moving a weak Brett to 1B.
TOTALS 5846 PA .272 .354 .448 Without Ruth, Caminiti, and Winn it falls to the .low 240's and slugging well below .400
I allowed too much defense , but hoping the pitching is bad enough that it will mostly negate those + plays.
Pitching I wanted both Gagne and Eckersley on the team, but couldn't find an Eck that was affordable and desirable for the good team.
'99 LaTroy Hawkins 177 IP 1.71 WHIP, 1.5 HR/9
'99 Jeff Fassero 157 IP 1.86 WHIP 2.01 HR/9
'01 Darren Oliver 154 IP 1.65 WHIP 1.34 HR/9
'83 Dennis Martinez 153 IP 1.66 WHIP 1.24 HR/9
'29 Johnny Miljus 137 IP 1.86 WHIP 0.70 HR/9
'06 Ryan Madson 135 IP, 1.69 WHIP, 1.34 HR/9
'96 Paul Quantrill 135 IP, 1.66 WHIP, 1.81HR/9
'07 Roger Clemens 99 IP 1.31 WHIP 0.82 HR/9
'73 Dick Bosman 94 IP 1.64 WHIP 1.76 HR/9
'47 Roger Wolff 49 IP 2.00 WHIP 0.98 HR/9
'03 Eric Gagne and '09 Mike Adams We all know how great they are, but with only 120 IP combined, hopefully they won't add too many wins.
TOTALS 1413 IP 1.60 WHIP 1.29 HR/9 Take out Gagne and Adams the rest come in at 1.69 WHIP and 1.37 HR/9
With only 1413 IP (plus being horrific) fatigue will set in early and make this staff even worse(hopefully negate some of the good defensive help).
My "good team" outlook:
LINEUP
C - '04 Ivan Rodriguez 575 PA .334, .383, .510 carries most of the load here, with the '70 McCarver a solid backup.
1B - '88 George Brett 686 PA .306, .389, .509
2B - '85 Tom Herr 696 PA .302, .379, .416
3B - '95 Ken Caminiti 678 PA .302, .380, .513
SS - '89 Ozzie Smith 664 PA .273, .335, .361 There were a couple different versions more desirable, but not for the $.
OF - '54 Mickey Mantle 685 PA .300, .408, .525
OF - '08 Randy Winn 667 PA .306, .363, .426
OF - '25 Babe Ruth 449 PA .290, .393, .543 Not expecting greatness here...hit some HR and not kill me on defense.
OF - '75 Larry Hisle 295 PA .314, .376, .494 The RH platoon with Ruth.
TOTALS: 5833 PA .303, 376, .469 Felt like a few extra PA needed as the pitching for the bad teams will make it rough on fatigue. I really wanted a little higher OBP, but just couldn't afford it. OVERALL DEFENSIVE RATINGS: B-/B-
PITCHING
'91 Roger Clemens 272 IP 1.05 WHIP
'45 Roger Wolff 263 IP 1.01 WHIP
'92 Dennis Martinez 227 IP 1.03 WHIP
'69 Dick Bosman 193 IP 1.01 WHIP IMHO, a solid value at about $31K/IP Use him quite a bit in 100M leagues.
'02 LaTroy Hawkins 81 IP 0.97 WHIP
'27 Johnny Miljus 80 IP 1.04 WHIP 0 HR/9
'03 Paul Quantrill 78 IP 0.98 WHIP
'10 Mike Adams 67 IP 1.06 WHIP
'17 Ryan Madson 59 IP 0.80 WHIP The closer.
'12 Darren Oliver 57 IP 1.92 WHIP
'91 Jeff Fassero 56 IP 1.01 WHIP A little more expensive than I would have liked, but the low HR/9 was appealing.
'07 Greg Gagne 33 IP 1.05 WHIP
TOTALS: 1465 IP 1.01 WHIP 0.39 HR/9 Not as strong a staff as I normally have, but in order to make sure Rick's staff was absolutely horrendous and with lower total IP, there were sacrifices made...especially in the bullpen.
Overall outlook
It looks to me that neither team I built is at the top or bottom of the heap. Probably a mistake to allow such good defense on the bad team. Expecting a middle of the road result overall. A fun build though...thanks Jeff!
