So I just finished an interesting season in Mantle where I missed playoffs by three games, looking back at some of the team hitting stats I noticed that we led the league in GIDP by a wide margin. We had 37 more double plays than the second place team in that category and had 100 more than the league average. I don't really anticipate a dramatic change in player personnel next season, can I address it simply by playing more hit and runs and staggaring the speedier players a bit more?

I can't see the franchise rankings page, but my immediate thought is that your team obviously hits more groundballs than other teams.

But I like the idea of bumping the baserunning aggressiveness. I've found Baserunning to be more important than just Speed, in a team context.

his ground ball rate is actually about league average.

The out modifier for gb vs fb is actually Power (paired comparison against the pitcher's gbfb). Offensively it is an XBH modifier but it also factors into outs. His team's avg Power is decent, about league average, it's not like he has a batch of slow <50 speed <50 power guys. He doesn't have any of those actually

Yes he has mostly slow guys which does affects the timing to 1st base, but the other rates are all league average, his final total should not be such a massive outlier. To me the only factor that makes sense in context of his roster is BR aggressiveness being too low.

The double plays are a concern. I do however think you would have made the playoffs if you had not had so many innings pitched from both. That is a lot of innings I feel you gave away and could easily account for more wins.

I have had the same problem in many of my leagues. I have targeted guys with high batter's eye so I am near the top of the league in walks, but I am also leading the league, BY A LOT, in grounding into double plays.

I guess it makes sense, if you walk a lot, and the guy who gets on first base doesn't have enough speed [and baserunning] to steal second and the next few guys coming to the plate don't have enough speed to outrun a groundball double play, you are going to have a lot GIDP as a team.

Current season of Glavine300 is the perfect example. Leading the league in walks by nearly 40 over the team in second place; leading the league in GIDP by nearly 20 over the guy in 2nd place and we are 121 games into the season. If you look at league leaders, it shows that i have four guys on the top 25 list for GIDP. The guy in the lead has 5 power so I think power has a little (as mentioned above). However, a more common theme for making it on this list is speed. There is not a single player on this top 25 list that has speed over 55. The majority of the players on the list have a speed that is under 50.

I think you will be fine for next season cause two of your guys that DIDP'd a lot will not be with you next season. For me, I need to re-evaluate.

Hey Brian,

You are right To a degree that bullpen in general and lack of a fifth starter let me down, I went with a 4 man rotation down the stretch that got me back into it. I do like Spence on a more limited role.

I'm sure there is more reasons as well. I just looked briefly and the 220 bad innings you got from them stood out to me. That is easily worth a few wins in my opinion. Adjust your base running accordingly and replace these to scrubs and you easily win 10 more games.

If you go aggressive on the hit and run, make sure your players have decent contact ratings. Otherwise, the strike 'em out - throw 'em out double play just replaces the standard 6-4-3.
