Recruiting can be very frustrating Topic

It feels like ive been losing out on a lot of rolls lately and i cant get a player i want. Im an a- prestige at St Louis and ive been picking my targets wisely and cant seem to win a roll. Its really starting to pain me after 2 years in a row this ive signed junk players just to have a roster. I feel like if you dont have 5 scholarships dont plan on signing anything good unless your trying to sign 1 player with 3 schollys. I havnt kept track but i think im 2/10 out of my last 10 rolls.

Any tips to make the dice roll my way? Do i just pray to the WIS gods or do i have to suck someone off to get a decent player around here.

Sorry had to vent.

it can be extremely frustrating. My LSU/Rupp team went through a terrible stretch of 10+ seasons. I'd sign the 100% guys but lost virtually every flip. Of the 45 guys I was over 50% on, I signed 10. Losing 35, for a 22% success rate when favored. I've had a season where I lost out on all 7 guys I was favored for. Devastating to building any quality depth.
I got to the point of trying to lock down a couple lower level guys early, then take my chance on battles. Just to keep a roster of 8 guys.
Then padding the non-conf with sims hoping to sneak into the NT.

But the recent past has been kinder. I even signed a top 5 guy as an underdog. We had never won as a dog before. Then followed that up by signing 2 of 3 I was favored for. 12 of 48. That's up to 25%.

Unless you have a team with a really high baseline prestige, and/or enjoy some geographic advantage, you are probably not going to be able to sustain prolonged periods of high level D1 success relying on elite recruits you have to battle for. You can’t control recruit generation, and you can’t control what your rivals do, in terms of who battles you for what; but you can manage your own expectations, which is probably the place to start if frustration is derailing enjoyment of a game. Losing 2 out of 10 rolls is by no means uncommon or debilitating. If you win the next 13 out of 20, you’ll still probably only remember the ones you lost. That’s just human nature.

There are very solid players you can land every year, sometimes 4-5 star caliber, without any visits. They’re not easy to find, but they’re out there. Flexibility, adaptability, and unpredictability can get you some surprising results sometimes.

Come to D2. Where you can find lots of players with value and not have to win a roll to sign each recruit. And no garbage EE things to deal with.

I recommend you take 2 walkons minimum every year.

Things were getting so bad for me at Gonzaga in losing an inordinate amount of battles in which I was the favorite- I started keeping track. I've since moved to Syracuse- but kept tracking the results. Here ya go...

131 – Graham 73/27 Favorite – Loss [Gonzaga]
131 – Dickerson 71/29 Favorite – Loss
131 – Jones 48/35/17 Favorite – Loss
132 – Whalen 60/40 Favorite – Win
132 – Anderson 32/68 Underdog – Win
132 – Freeman 39/24/27 Underdog – Win
133 – Ruggeri 57/43 Favorite – Loss
133 – Ransome 66/34 Favorite - Loss

The favorite is 1-7 in the 8 recruiting battles I've been in over 3 seasons.
