WhatIf He Was My Icon League Topic

So here's the idea...
I love the Icon leagues. Love the connection to actual players from your franchise, love the trade activity, love it all.
However, for any one that has done an Icon League, you know that some franchises have league altering advantages in certain players available to them. So my proposal is that in addition to being available to every team a player player for, I would add the WhatIf element that he was also available to any team in the draft that has passed on him.
Example:
Michael Jordan...true Icon rules make him a Bull for life. This league would also make him draft eligible for Washington, and Houston and Portland, because as we all know he went 3rd after the Rockets and Blazers went in different directions.

Imagine if the Trailblazers could right the wrong of passing on Jordan...

A few rules....any player drafted in the 2nd round (or later/undrafted) is open to every team
Any player taken #1 overall that spent his entire career with one team IS a true Icon and belongs to that team
We start with a random draw draft in the 1988 season (1st year with 24+ teams)
In the case of WhatIf picks, the team that has draft rights will be the team that made the actual pick, without regard to who may have traded the pick.

Pick a franchise and let's play!

I'm in. Team TBD. What is the salary cap?
10/17/2019 12:23 PM
No cap. Whatever you can build year to year.

I'm not sure I fully understand so I'll likely have questions throughout but count me in with San Antonio.

To be clear, this is a progressive league where you have keepers year to year like any other. Just that the list of people available to each franchise is a defined group.

Okay, very different then what I was thinking. I will have to think about it.

Like Quaker, I might more questions as we go on. But I'm in, will pick a team as soon as I see a reply to these couple questions. And, I'll let it be known now that I might ask questions that have a simple answer, I just like clarification so we're all in total awareness of the rules.
1. What format is the draft? I'm assuming ABBAABBAABBA, or some variation to help out the B order.
2. Any team can pick anyone that played for them at any point, so LAC, LAL, CHI or CLE could pick Ron Harper in the inaugural draft?
3. Any team that passed on a player IRL can pick them, so someone drafted, say, 21st can be drafted by most of the league?
4. Can we go for 2 teams now, or would we prefer to see how the league is filling before we might let people have 2?

1-yes, initial draft will be ABBA
2+3-yes, a player can be taken by any team that they played for, or that made a pick before they were selected. In your Ron Harper example, he could be drafted by BOS, GS, IND, NYY, PHX, and DAL in addition to CLE, LAC, CHI, and LAL.
4-for now, I would like to shoot for 24 unique owners--perhaps overly optimistic, but I do think once people see how this can really play out, it will gain some momentum

Cool, thanks for the answers. I've been flopping between 2 teams, think I'll try out Chicago the Lakers. I do have a couple eastern teams in mind if we decide to let people try 2 teams.

I decided to change up the team. Figured it was early enough, do it now or stick with CHI.

One more question, regarding trades. Can players be dealt to teams they never played for, or only ones they did? It'd be interesting if they could only be dealt to ones they played for, but I can see how it would be pretty limiting. I'm good either way, just wondering.
10/18/2019 12:40 AM
Eligibility never changes. Ron Harper could not be dealt to the 76ers, but he could be traded to the Suns.

It's mildly limiting in some ways but also leads to a ton of trading and draft board strategy when you have a loaded class.

Another example: Larry Bird.....could be drafted by Boston obviously, but also the Blazers, Kings, Pacers, Knicks, and Warriors.
