I've got a veteran SP with 2 yr.'s left on a bad contract who has cleared waivers. Tried removing him from the 40-man but he elected to become a FA so my choices are releasing or keeping him. If he's released, I'm still on the hook for the last 2 yr.'s of the contract, right?

Yes. Whenever you Release a player you retain any remaining term on his contract. And whoever signs him next can have him for minimum salary.

Sometimes you just have to demote and eat the deal. If he's old enough I've heard if instances he may retire if you demote him below AA, but I can't seem to find that discussion.
