Redshirt a Non Qualifier? Topic

I understand that if I have a player on my team that was a non qualifier for his freshman year that he can get a 5th year (Sr./5) if he keeps at least a 2.7 GPA. But, after his freshman season, can I redshirt him during his Sophomore season, or does he just have to play out his So, Jr, Sr and then Sr/5 seasons?
