Do you read, skim or skip the play by play most days/ every day? Skim if its a close game, Q? How, if at all, do you use the pbp to refine or adjust strategy going forward...maybe should be another topic if there's any response

So..... what does the PBP tell you that the box score doesn't....

1) The biggest asset I get out of the PBP are the substitution patterns.
2) Next are analyzing big scoring runs/droughts by my team or even the opponent.

Sometimes your opponent goes on a 12-0 run to seal a game. You have no idea this has happened if you don't read the PBP. Furthermore when analyzing that PBP you may realize there are long stretches where you have NO good scorer on the floor. OR you may notice that the guy coming off your bench to be a big scorer shares the floor with your top distribution guy too much and, thus, doesn't get enough touches. So a strategy that works in theory, doesnt work in practice. You may also notice a sub pattern that works great vs. zone fails miserably vs. press because the sub patterns change. Which brings me to #3.

3) Are my guys playing tired? PBP lets you know what condition they are in. Again, this all involves how you substitute and you may adjust depth chart settings to keep more/better players fresh.

4) Other miscellaneous - some things are more clear after you read the PBP. For example, you may have been killed on the boards but realize that most of their rebounds are from our missed FTs (which have a higher% of going to the defensive team than regular shots).

great post mully. 100% agree with point 1, that is the biggest value of the pbp, is watching the substitution patterns, and i guess i sort of consider how fatigue shakes out to be part of the same.

getting the offensive rotation to fit nicely is one of the more critical items in this game, when you start trying to take very good teams to the next level. it can definitely be tricky, and watching the pbp is a must for nailing this kind of thing down.

that said, i almost never look at pbps - only when i am actively working on getting my rotation right and such (typically during the CT, often dragging into the first couple NT games), and then possibly the last couple games of the NT. part of this is my propensity for rarely having a regular season team that meaningfully resembles my post season team. if you don't like reading pbps, thats fine - but you should watch them to check on your rotation and fatigue, until you are comfortable with those elements of your situation.

I think I probably spend more time reading my next opponent's PBP, especially if they run M2M defense. A lot can be gleamed about their depth chart.

You can also get an idea about their end of half/game settings. If they're behind, are they going to shoot more 3's? Then you can adjust your settings accordingly.

After the first few games I don't spend much time reading mine unless there is something weird in the boxscore.

^^ Forgot about this ^^^

Yes - I like to know who is first off the bench at each position.

While I definitely read the PBP to check on substitution patterns (which helps me tweak my distribution and fatigue settings), I also just think it is more fun to read the PBP. Reading the PBP is so much more entertaining than just immediately seeing the final score and is the closest we can get to "watching" our games.

If I had less teams, I'd look over some pbp. But after dozens of seasons with dozens of teams, it's just not as important to me anymore.

On the flip side if I had enough time to read pbp than I'd probably prefer to spend my time building a new team.

So around and around we go.

I’ll read them to see if teams are doubling players in previous games, or my player in the recent game.

I used to read pbp alot. Mostly I use it now to determine fatigue, see sub patterns, see lineup changes of the other team and doubling tendencies.

I'll add that I only do this for tourney games because I'm lazy
