WIS is finally doing what we all wanted and has erected a coronavirus promo where the first season of a new game is free. Allen DIII starts tomorrow, so everyone tell your friends to make an account and try the game out.

WhatIfSports Hoops Dynasty has my favorite community I've ever met on the internet, and its one of the things that makes this game so fun for me. Let's make sure we welcome all these new players with open arms, give them advice, and hopefully they will fall in love with this game and stick around.

Excited that so new players are joining, it will hide my extreme mediocrity as I try and figure this game out (lol)

Firstly, I hope I'm wrong, and I hate to be a negative nancy but I'm not holding my breath since we've been here before with FREEHD. I remember a couple years ago when they did it, populations shot up to over 300 in D3 and then immediately dropped back to normal numbers the following season. I think we'll see a better retention this time around since people have very little else to do these days but I doubt it'll be better than 30%.

Right now we're at 41 D3 coaches in Allen so we shall see.

All I know is that when populations have exploded in the past, I was pretty excited about it - see here for post from 2016.

I sent sitemails to every single person who joined my conference with 1 person replying saying he was just checking it out since it was free and probably wouldn't stick around. No one else responded. None of the 4-6 new people who joined bothered to recruit, set lineups, etc. I also posted on conference chats welcoming them to HD and offered to help anyone who needed. Basically crickets in response. Fool me once, shame on you...

He isn’t wrong though. We need to find a way to either 1. Get a lot of people to try (because 30% would still come back and if we get a ton of people then that 30% is still a lot) or 2. Higher the retention rate.

Those are things we can effect.

The thing is, that very first season, your almost guaranteed to suck. And it's not so much the lack of knowledge of a newbie, but even the most seasoned of coaches have a difficult time in Division III making the playoffs that first season. You would really have to know what to look for in the team your taking over for the SIM.

And most people do not want to play something they think they are not very good at playing. So they lose, and then they quit.

Most newbies may not even know what Sitemail is, or what that dumbell is all about. So them not responding is not surprising.

My conference was not effected in the new comers of Division III in Ohio.

I'll take 30% for sure. We all have extra time because of corona, so let's try to get the retention rate as high as possible.
