Has anything changed? Is it still stupid to put money in advanced scouting?

No and yes.

About sums it up.

The little tiny things that have changed are the things most returning owners probably forgot about or never knew anyway -- no more extra year of control by opening up a new window and signing guys to third year arb and long term deal at the same time. I never used this anyway, but I think some vet owners did.

Yep, agree.

I'm trying to get a handle on this advanced scouting thing. Why would it make sense to put $0 in AS? Wouldn't that kill you on trades?

Kinda does. But what matters is how important that is to you.

Like I said in the other thread, Advanced shows you projections for your own prospects after you roster them, and the younger players on other teams. So when I trade for another team's young player, I'm guessing based on my experience. What are the player's current ratings, how old is he and how long ago was he drafted, how highly was he drafted, what was that team's likely draft budget. I'm taking a half-informed shot in the dark. And yes, I've made a few trades where I traded for a prospect who never made the bigs.

So how important is that?

Consider the league Environment - in one of my leagues, the owners are super conservative. True future studs never get traded unless it's for a prime of career all star caliber player with an affordable contract. I don't trade those players away, therefore I'm never trading for a true stud, only borderline ML types.
Then there's my own personal style. When I trade there's usually something I don't like about the player I'm trading away. Usually trying to get out of his contract. That factors into how much I can ask for.
Bottom line, in neither of my leagues would I ask for a top-ten draft pick in trade. No point, I know those players aren't available.
Or I trade for established veterans. Over age 27 you don't even need to see projections because almost every player has already peaked. You're trading for current ratings.

Generally speaking, the time you would get the most value out of Advanced scouting is if you were actively trading prospects for prospects. In my experience, that kind of trading environment is rare.

Given that, owners who run 0 Advanced just find somewhere else they'd much rather spend that 20 million.

Makes sense. Thanks!

Just to clarify, there isn't anything wrong with Advanced Scouting. It works fine as it is. A few years ago, when Admin (at the time) did a big reboot of the scouting processes, they made a few enhancements to it that made it work better in theory.

It's just that in practice, many owners don't feel a need to use it.
