Back in the saddle - D3 Crum Topic

Ok.........I'm a former coach, but its literally been 5-6 years since I played. I was never elite as a coach but put out a pretty competitive squad each year. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Hoops Dynasty was still around and active. With that said, I've taken a quick peek through some of the rosters / forums and it appears some changes have been made. I'm seeing D3 rosters in the 700 plus range (which when I left, no team was even close to that), and maybe something along the line of camps for recruiting.
Whats going on here? I feel like I'm coming out of the Ice Age possibly.
Any tips / suggestions to ease my transition back into the game?

Same boat as you. Been reading the 3.0 Guide pinned to top of forums. Prolly be a season or two before we're comfortable with what to do.

I've been back quite a few seasons (DI) after some time away as well. You learn a ton about the 3.0 the first few seasons, but equally feel like you haven't learned anything. Feel like I haven't stopped learning since coming back (not in a bad way at all!).

Welcome back!

This is definitely a great guide.

I'm working on a YouTube series right now for scouting and recruiting. Scouting isn't too hard to pick up. In DII and DIII I only use FSS (Scouting Service) and individual scouting... I'm very particular about the type of players I want to use my money on in DII/DIII. You can see the states I scout in DII here. Generally the area around me for DII and DI. I aim to discover 125 DII and 150 DI with 3 openings.

Then, I go to the recruit pool, and scout anyone C overall with at least a C in Physical and B in Defense. Then I scout anyone with an A in any category. Then I do B in Physical and C in defense. I scout all of them to Level 3. The ones that look nice at level 3 I'll scout to level 4.

Then I will do C/C/C but only if they don't have F WE if I have extra money. I will scout them to Level 2, and then I will only scout the ones with at least a C in DE and at least C in at to level 3.

“I only use FSS (Scouting Service) and individual scouting”

My approach is almost exactly the opposite; the only time I scout a guy individually is very late in recruiting, there might be a D1 INTL I’m curious about. That’s not to say my way is right, and cub is wrong. There is no “right way”, though there are plenty of wrong ways - most involve not understanding the relative value of attributes, or how the game mechanics work, or completely misjudging (in either direction) how high you can reach. You probably want to get a mentor and talk through your approach before pressing buttons. If you haven’t done that, all is not lost, because at D3 you can move up pretty quickly, a lost season of recruiting won’t kill you. And if you want, you can start over next season at D2, which lots of folks find more fun (and easier, in some ways) than D3.

I’ve recently joined GD, and in getting ready for my first season, came across an analytical blog series to the effect of “Have a Plan”. That’s basically it here, too. Develop a plan that makes sense to you, is fun for you, and is reasonable given what we know about the system, and then try to execute.

Hey ericbfor3,
Great to have you back. Way back in like 2014, in the Crum 60's decade, you were at D3 Salve Regina, and i was at D3 Albertus Magnus. We used to schedule every year from what i remember... a southcoast New England rivalry. That was a LONG time ago.

Recruiting in my opinion, overall, is better than back in "2.0"... everything else in the game is similar. HD Graphics and layout have improved too.

Heard that ericbfor3!

I was decently accomplished in 2.0 and just jumped back into 3.0. I went mid-major D1 to try to figure my way out!

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome mat and feedback. I thinking i'm gonna take some lumps early on. More so than when I originally started playing WIS I think, since I'm going to have to re-think how I approach the game. With that said, i think i'm gonna continue to play D3 which is what I enjoyed the most when I previously played.
