Noob Needs Help - Catcher Topic

I really struggle picking Catchers, I never want to spend too much but then I end up feeling like I get dominated on base paths if I don't or errors, but I also don't want a total dud hitter...I know I am asking people to reveal their catcher picks but I just need some help locking onto some guys...From what I remember from previous open leagues, I recall Ted Simmons the most?

Any help would be fantastic as I just came back after a little bit off and am building my first team back into OL.

Thank you!

It might just be me, but I've had the best success with 2001 Paul Lo Duca. Has great defense and decent offense at an affordable price. Never had success with 1993 Chris Hoiles, but I want to!

In open leagues, you're likely to see a lot of guys trying to really run the bases. Get an A+ arm if you can, and I'd be wary of going anything less than an A-, as you'll get guys running all over you. I find catcher usually ends up being a position where I spend more money than other positions, as that A+ arm costs a lot, especially if you get one that will have at least average offense. Save money elsewhere - get a good catcher.

Be aware that an A+ arm carries with it an automatic fixed salary price hike - independent of PA. Which is why many of the most expensive players in SLB in terms of $/PA are low PA catchers with an A+ arm.

Example: 2019 Andrew Knizner. He of the .226 batting average. More expensive per PA than 1932 Jimmie Foxx.
2011 Wilin Rosario (.204 average). More expensive per PA than 1922 Hornsby.
2004 Pat Borders (.189 average). Almost exactly the same $/PA at 1926 Ruth.

To minimize the effect of that fixed cost, generally it makes sense to buy a catcher with a lot of PA.

platoon a better hitter with a noodle arm with a better defender against the high SB teams. yes in $/PA terms the defender will cost a lot but that doesn't hurt too much if you only buy 100-200 PAs from him. your TOTAL $/pa at the position will be lower. it just requires game to game management
