Worst regular season record to win an NC? Topic

Just curious. What are the worst regular season records in HD at each division to win an NC?

In Knight, it looks like the worst regular season record across all divisions is Stanford in season 135 who finished 15-11 in the regular season before grabbing an at-large bid and winning the NC with a final record of 22-12.

In Phelan season 72 at CSU San Bernardino, we started out the season 2-8, finished conference play at 13-3 (lost in the conference tournament championship) and won the national title with a final record of 23-12 as a 6 seed.

In the final four, we beat the conference mate who beat us in the conference tournament and then beat another conference foe for the national championship.

Yeah it was crazy, truly a tale of two seasons in one. My roster was stacked and every time I would lose a game in OOC play I would check to see if I messed up planning or something. I chalk it up to just being outrageously unlucky for the first part of the season.

season 135 here.

Thanks for pulling that up.

5-5 in non-con that year it looks like. Not quite 2-8. Matt, you may have a claim to fame here.

Hey, I'll take it!

here is the link to season 72: https://www.whatifsports.com/hd/TeamProfile/History.aspx?tid=14081

8-7 on the road and 8-1 on a neutral court. Pretty wild

Won with #16 RPI. Season 100. 9-2 Home, 9-6 Roas, 9-0 Neutral. Only 8 losses, but that's because we played a *terrible* schedule. Finished with #17 SOS after beating 37, 5, 11, 6, 9, 2 in the NT. So can't imagine how bad my SOS was before.

6-4 noncon, 12-4 in a super ****** B12. Had above a 40 RPI and was 35 or so on the PR before the CT.

27 on PR with a much worse RPI before the tournament.

Also we sucked: according to my spreadsheet I had a 0.8% chance of winning those 6 games in a row.

Naismith - Dallas D3 - Seasons 85 and 86. 85 I won the title with 22-11 record and 8-8 in conference. Went back to the title game the next season with a 20-13 record and 6-10 conference record.

That conference was stacked though.

Season 45 of D3 Wooden, Elms won the title with an RPI of 18. I didn't even bother to check any of the other 8 worlds yet. They're the new leader in the clubhouse.

Besides the two teams mentioned above, I found two others with 15-11 regular season records that won NT's.

In Naismith D3, season 45, Drew and in Crum D3, season 10, Rochester Tech.

Found surprisingly more 16-10 records to win a title than I thought I would though....

Haven't found worse than RPI of 18 yet but in seasons 58 and 59 in Knight D3 there were some interesting occurrences:

Season 58, Virginia Wesleyan won the NT as a 9 seed finishing with an RPI of 15 (they went 32-3 but had an incredibly weak schedule).

Season 59, Defiance lost the NT as a 12 seed. They finished 24-10 (18-8 in the regular season) with an RPI of 28. That's the worst RPI of a runner up I've found so far.
