Eric Davis, a 162 game stretch (1986-87) Topic

Two year old Joe Posnaski article I just came across on Eric Davis.

Davis played in 162 games, starting 152. He got 659 plate appearances. It is basically a full year.
Over that stretch, Davis hit .308/.406/.622 with 47 homers, 149 runs, 123 RBIs and 98 stolen bases (getting caught just 12 times).

In the equivalent of one year of baseball, Davis just about had a 50-100 … 50 homers and 100 stolen bases. It's almost laughable. It looks like a baseball video game on cheat mode. You can look and look through the history of baseball. You will not find anything quite like that.

I knew Davis was good; didn't realize he was that good!

He was my favorite (non Red Sox) player in the 80s... man from 1986-90 he was something. And he showed flashes of that brilliance later on. I’ve always wondered what his career would have looked like if (a) he had stayed healthy (b) the Reds had given him a full time job in 1984.

Loved watching him play...one of the most all around gifted players of his era.

I see Chris Sabo made a nice tag over at third. There's a player I really liked in that era. Maybe it was the glasses, I don't know. Never used him in the sim, but he seems like he could be useful in a low cap sometime.

Davis had that 27 HR / 80 SB partial season where he didn't become a regular till June, then started 87 on fire in April and May (.355 with 19 HR and 20 SB by May 30). I wish there was a stat for how many potential home runs he caught those days, reaching up over the outfield wall. This highlight video includes a sequence where he robbed Jack Clark at the wall twice in the same game. The announcer says "I guess he is the next Willie Mays". I remember thinking the same thing as a kid who had only read about Mays's combination of power, speed, and defense. I guess diving into walls and diving across astroturf is what ultimately limited Davis's career, with the injuries that brought.
