Excited to be here Topic

Perhaps the best thing that has come out of quarantine for me is discovering this site! I just wanted to introduce myself and say I am happy to be here and excited to meet ya'll in some leagues.

I am curious, what is your all-time go-to player in the sim?

Depends on what cap you are playing...Tim Raines, Max Carey, Ed Walsh, Tris Speaker, Babe Ruth, Addie Joss...

BTW, Welcome. May I humbly recommend that you read the two threads posted at the top of this page: Advice for Newbies, and Frequently Asked Questions.

Welcome!

I second contrarian23's suggestion to familiarize yourself with those threads.

Addie Joss' 1908 season is at the top of the wanted list. Myself, I'd include some names you may otherwise overlook, Ferris Fain, Ed Delahanty, Luis Aparicio. I also like to leave a spot for Buddy Biancalana when I can, but he's not exaclty an all-time go-to guy.

Love myself some Ty Cobb

Welcome! Definitely catch up on the threads referenced above. The forums are full of tips and advice.

My go to player depends on the cap, for sure, but assuming $80m OL:

Pitcher: 2011 Roy Halladay
Hitter: 1900 Mike Donlin

until i have a good team at a $100+ cap, all my favorites will be for $80m caps as well ha

2010 Cliff Lee is, imo, the best buy you can get, probably followed closely by 2011 Roy Halladay. Those two are in every rotation I can get them in.

All my hitters are extremely inconsistent, probably cause I prefer pitchers parks, but I really like 1918 Tilly Walker - though when he's bad, he's really bad
.254 .299 .408
- and when he's good...he's pretty great for the $
.290 .354 .510

Hello

Calling all A.Joss'1908 fans : how many of you have had actual great team W/L success with him ? Yes, he always gets his numbers. But except for a few who've figured out advanced tricks, I've seen limited overall team success with his stifling 22.6M salary and only 300 IP. I'd never use him except in a massive salary Theme League, and certainly wouldn't recommend him to a newb wandering the halls of value management. And while you can certainly find better overall production, the R.Halladay'11 recommendation isn't bad for his price.

Yes, 08 Joss is currently only usable at the highest caps.

Welcome Bill...and echo what was said above. Read the threads but here would be my quick start guide. (My opinion, not scientific, but works for me)

Normalization Matters - RL Steroid HRs guys (McGwire/Bonds) will NOT hit as many as RL.
For hitters - RBI/RS do NOT matter. OPS and OBP does. For pitchers. ERA/Ks do NOT matter. ERC/OAV/WHIP/HR9 does.
Focus on Numbers not Names - There are many "1 yr wonders" who outperform Hall of Famers in a given year. They are called "Cookies."
Leagues - In open leagues, you will take your lumps for a couple seasons. Pay attention to what Winning teams are doing. (speed guys in certain parks, not having HR guys in the Astrodome, not having high HR/9 pitchers in Coors field). While legal, some guys will use a lot of "cookies" just to pad their stats feasting on newbies, that isnt fun for me but it happens.
Draft enough innings/ABs until you know what you are doing. A .400 hitter who only batted 300 times will be of limited use to you until you know how to build around it.
Owners - Most will be helpful if you ask but not all. Do NOT complain after 20 games if your .375 hitter is hitting .200. It will solve itself.
Remember though that every other team was handpicked also so often players underperforms RL stats unless influenced by park selection and competition.
Many strategies and approaches...that is what makes this fun. Many of the owners on this site have 1000s of games played in every park with many players so the challenge to many is trying different things to see what works...

GL and Welcome.
