You're giving up the best player by far in the second trade. The guys you're getting back are useful but by no means stars. Cantu is a star. I'd say no.

The first trade is more a question of what you need. Pena shouldn't be playing short but he's a very good 3B. Is that worth one very good and another pretty good SP? That's up to you.

I can see some argument to be made trading Cantu for Pena, straight up. Personally, I wouldn't do it; but there may be some situations where it made sense. I see absolutely no reason to add Gibson to the deal. And I agree with bripat that his contract is pretty unsavory.

The second deal is the classic, "I'll give you two dimes and a nickel for your quarter." No way you should ever make that deal.

It's really more like three pieces of pocket lint for your quarter. Someone is trying to take advantage of what he presumes is your reliance on ADV and/or ignorance of player development patterns.

None of these players is all that likely to stay with you long enough to help you once your rebuild is done--not even the guy with 80 patience. But Cantu has the highest patience and is the one you should stay with, or trade for legit top prospects.

+Cantu would give you a Type A Free Agent if you let him walk after next season. That is especially helpful if you're rebuilding because you're more likely to get another 1st round pick with a worse record.
