Draft pick looked good when scouting, but now... Topic

I have my HS scouting maxed out at 20 and my advance scouting is at 0. I had the 4th overall pick and grabbed what looked like a pretty nice player, my second ranked guy.

But after signing him his projected ratings took a decent hit. I'm hoping that's because I'm looking at him through the view of my advance scouting, which is obviously poor, and that my HS scouting projected ratings would be closer to reality. Does that sound right?

The ratings you see on the draft board are from your hs scouting budget if he was in high school. Once he is signed it reverts to your adv scouting. SO yes.

You’ll probably be ok. That being said, the fuzzy ratings turned me off of HS drafting because they can be waaaaay off. If I could change my scouting budget every year I’d have college at 20 for picks 1-15 in the first round and HS scouting for picks 15-32 in the first round.

Ok, feeling a little better now, thanks. I was just concerned that the guy I thought was a star suddenly appeared to be an average OF. Much appreciated.

After the draft I usually go back to the Prospects page and copy the projections of the players I ended up drafting... a reminder of why I drafted them in the first place. I throw the original projections in the player's Notes field, save them for comparisons down the road.

I do this too. Just save them away in a spreadsheet. I run 0 on Adv Scouting too and I completely ignore it in all decisions. You'll see crazy things like a Pitcher with 24 Dur projected to have 45 or something like that lol

That's a really good idea. The copy and paste of the list of prospects on the draft board could also help if I ever want to trade for one that someone else drafted, offsetting my 0 for advanced scouting. Lots of extra $ to put elsewhere while still having a true scouting report.

I just went through something similar. I had a top prospect with defensive projections of 93/98/100/99 with a HS budget of $20M.

After signing him, his currents ratings (not projections) do not show a guy who will even get close to that: 76/54/81/57. I'll be lucky if he even becomes an average SS with those numbers.

$20M scouting (HS and Col) gets you within +/-10 ratings of the players true ceiling. I always factor that into my worst case when comparing two prospects for draft ranking purposes.

Jt - Your guy is probably one of those prospects that gains 3 or 4 points in his first ST and then has a couple of cycles of 2 or 3 point jumps. I'd wager he averages ~90 in his fielding ratings.

I sure hope so

Let me ask, would you have drafted a different player?
