Exposure to Rule 5 Draft Topic

Greetings,

n00b question...Is the only way to prevent a player from being exposed to the Rule 5 Draft is by having him on your 40-man roster? What if he's signed to a longer term deal...does that prevent exposure?

Assigning him to your 40 man is the only way to protect him.

From the FAQ:
Rule 5 Draft How do I know if a player I have is eligible for the Rule 5 draft? Any player on a franchise with 4 or more years of pro experience, not on the club’s 40-man roster and not signed beyond the current season is eligible to be drafted.

So if a player is signed beyond the current season to a big league deal but is not on the 40, they are not eligible for Rule 5. But would you ever have a player like that hanging around in your minors?

Well, I'm new, but the franchise I inherited seems to have a bunch of pretty decent prospects sitting at AA and HiA that are Rule-5 eligible. Collectively there are more than 40 (incl ML guys). Maybe I'm just valuing the guys too highly.
