Round recap: barracuda3...great start, Eddie Collins is a stud and locks down the 2nd base position for all 3 teams. Ed Morris is a big innings score early, all but assures 2 solid pitching staffs and a 3rd that will not have to grasp for innings.

beauchamp....Silver King is a good building block. He makes at least one team an instant contender and gives flexibility to how and when you want to build your staff.

Chisock...A+ round. Arky Vaughan is a top 5 SS. Three teams covered at a premiere position right off the bat. Greinke and Leonard each give one indisputable ace level season plus good 2nd and 3rd options to create multiple staff building options.

cholatse...Duke Snider is a brilliant pick for this format. He gives 3 seasons of >1.000 OPS with great defense and decent speed. He is underrated historically and therefore a good under the radar target.

glowguy...Lou Boudreau is also a top 5 SS. It is not possible to say this isn't a great piece to begin a build around. His top season tends to not reach expectations but it's so good that falling short still means a really good season.

kbosch...Joe Jackson has 3 outrageously productive offensive seasons to use, which can't be overstated with the quality of pitching most staffs will offer. I wish he fielded a little better, but it isn't bad enough to be unworkable. Randy Johnson gives options. In fact, the hardest thing about Randy to me is deciding which way to go for his 3rd season. Not a bad problem to have.

MAZZILLI16...Denny McLain gives you one very good year and one pretty good year plus comfort innings. HR/9 is an issue to a certain extent but it's so early in the draft, there is time to cover up the worst of him. Lefty O'Doul is Joe Jackson Jr with power. A steady 3 team anchor for your lineups.

mllama54.....Roger Clemens is solid across 3 seasons. Much like Randy Johnson, there are a few different options for that 3rd team, but none get in the way of a quality team build.

thunder1008...Ty Cobb is a huge get. Can give you so much across all 3 leagues. Hard to imagine him getting through, but here you are.

tigerrott....Lou Gehrig and Barry Bonds. I'm not interested in being in any division with you. So many can't go wrong options.

Round winner: a 3 way race but I give round 1 to tigerrott. Lou Gehrig almost never fails to produce. Ever. Bonds walks more often than most of his owners would prefer, but with the right people around him (Gehrig, for example), he can be lethal.

Roughest round: Everyone that went 0 for 3 but to a certain extent all of us that didn't bother to go after Hornsby or Lajoie.

Round recap:
barracuda3...Charlie Buffinton, Charlie Ferguson, Ed Seward. Imagine being two rounds in to this draft and not needing another inning. Each of these three guys has at least 1 way above average, staff anchoring, type season. Most have 2 very good ones at the least. Put a few gloves in the field and a few bats in the lineup, then cherry pick a few bullpen arms and this is going to be a hard team to compete with.

big_dowg...Rube Waddell has a lot of great seasons. The real question is picking the best 3. One stands out to me, but the other two could be any of 5 other seasons. All in all, if you're going to go 1 for 6 to start the draft this is a pretty effective 1 to hit on.

Chisock...Ron Guidry is deceptive in the SIM to me. He has an obvious ace season, but he is also a guy that I often see overperform compared to what seem like pedestrian numbers in his other seasons. This is a productive pick.

cholatse...Joe Kelley is another 3 season stud. Hits like a machine, is not a liability in the field, and can run a bit. Although in my experience, he gets caught stealing a bit more than one would like, he's still a great get.

DoctorKz...Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander, Roger Connor. Mets fan, full disclosure. Jacob deGrom is awesome. His last 3 seasons have been Pedro-esque and this pick is outstanding. Verlander is capable of being close but the HR/9 can be a bit scary in a few of his otherwise better seasons. Of course, if you can't make contact with a pitch, you aren't hitting a home run. Roger Connor is a steady selection. He gives you 3 legit very good seasons and if you can take care of a position in full with one pick, that's a win.

fatboydad54...Mike Trout, Joe Morgan, Elton Chamberlain. That's some pretty effective baserunning right out of the gate. Trout tends to hit below average in these leagues but he's still going to get on base and he's still going to slug and defend. Morgan has that monster year and several very good years to choose from. I like the pairing of he and Trout a lot. 1888 Elton Chamberlain is a gift. No staff would not benefit from having him.

Fusion27s...Frank Smith is 3 seasons of high inning, keep it in the park dependability. Every team would love a guy like this.

glowguy...Eddie Plank is a guy like Smith for somebody to love having. He'll get hit here and there but he's going to give solid production across all 3 leagues.

happyhours...Don Sutton is underrated by history in my opinion. Flashier guys from that era get the love, but this guy was outstanding. He had so many great seasons that choosing which one to use for that third league is a very difficult decision.

kbosch...King Kelly and Todd Helton. Kelly gives you multiple gifts with his best season. He gives you arguably the greatest single season performance at the catcher position, but also does it with complete (albeit not gold glove level) versatility should you need to cover something else here and there. Helton, 3 seasons of >1.000 OPS with outstanding defense? Yes, please.

MAZZILLI16...Mike Scott gives you that nasty 1986. Paired with McLain you now have the makings of a super staff, or you have another team covered with an ace.

mllama54...Paul Waner is a quiet, steady, great pick. A guy that is nearly impossible to strike out and has such a high average has so much value in this format.

njbigwig...Stan Coveleski and Cupid Childs....At the very least you get one great and one very good season from Coveleski. A good foundation to a staff. Cupid Childs is one of the best offensive 2B of all time and will be productive across 3 leagues.

nocomm999...Russ Ford and Chief Bender....Ford is also a guy that gives you a brilliant season to build around. Fact: in the history of baseball there are 133 individual seasons (based on playing 162) where a pitcher has thrown 240+ innings with a WHIP of 1.00 or better. Chief Bender has 3 of those. If you add a HR/9 of less than 0.05, there are 27 such seasons. Chief Bender has 3 of those. Side note: when I would play wiffle ball and throw a curve I would shout out "Chief Bender!!!" as I threw it.

northof49...Mike Adams and Billy Hamilton. Adams is a rare 3 season dominant bullpen arm. Staffs need these guys and this is a good one to get. Billy Hamilton will be crazy productive across all three leagues. Not a ton of .500 OBP guys out there.

pedrocerrano...Joe Wood, Bruce Sutter, and Craig Biggio. Joe Wood is super effective in the SIM. He puts up good numbers consistently and will probably do it here in 3 leagues. Bruce Sutter just gives so many good innings out of the bullpen. There are not too many like him, and less than a handful that can be mentioned in the same sentence numbers wise. Solid combo to build a staff around. Craig Biggio is so solid. A player you just put in the lineup everyday and not think much about because you know he's not hurting you. A big time need in Pai Gow.

The Taint...Ed Reulbach and Mariano Rivera. Reulbach gives you a ton of high quality innings and seasons to choose from. It's a nice luxury when you have options to build the way you want. Mariano gets a lot of talk about not performing up to real life. Mostly because his RL numbers are so ridiculously good, they are hard to believe. He also gives a ton of great years to pick from so this combo provides a ton of flexibility moving forward.

tigerrott...Lady Baldwin and Hugh Duffy. Baldwin gives you two really, really good seasons and then some filler innings for a third. Of course, adding Duffy to Gehrig and Bonds means filler innings might win 20 games. No offense to this point in the draft is even close. The man hit .440 one season.

Round 2 winner: There are at least 4 of you that can legit say "He's wrong, I won this round." after this, but I'm giving this one to barracuda3. The sheer mass of quality innings and what it opens him up to be able to do the rest of the way is too impressive to ignore.

Roughest Round: All of us that fell into the day late knee jerk reaction to Hornsby, Lajoie, Maddux, Wagner, Williams......

Round 3
20ks 2 Max Scherzer
barracuda3 7 Chuck Klein Troy Tulowitzki
beauchamp 1
big_dowg 4 Gaylord Perry Luke Appling Johnny Mize
calhoop 3 Bob Caruthers Hoyt Wilhelm Chipper Jones
Chisock 5 Jackie Robinson

The Taint 3 Craig Kimbrel
thunder1008 2 Freddie Lindstrom
tigerrott 5 Catfish Hunter
ybjsports 1 Rickey Henderson

Round recap:
barracuda3...Chuck Klein and Troy Tulowitzki. With all that pitching in hand, bats are on tap. Klein is a thumper. Landing a 3 season >1.000 OPS guy is always good, but the third round is a huge get. Tulo is a decent bat that will have a few ups and downs but end up pretty steady. Where he is a gem is on defense. His glove will make a huge difference over 486 games.

big_dowg...Gaylord Perry, Luke Appling, and Johnny Mize. Perry has a multitude of strong, high inning seasons. Has 1 season that can serve as an ace for sure and options to help out any rotation. Luke Appling has one of the top 10 individual SS seasons of all time. A little surprised to see him get through in the 3rd round. Johnny Mize is a sim reliable. He will hit for average and he will hit for power in all 3 leagues.

calhoop....Bob Caruthers, Hoyt Wilhelm, and Chipper Jones. This is a good bounce back from an 0 for 6 start. Caruthers is very dependable for 2 seasons and is a good safety net for innings in the third league. Wilhelm is a high quality bullpen arm with 3 seriously shut down seasons to pick. Chipper Jones tortured the Mets for his whole career. I hate him, but this is a good pick.

Chisock...Jackie Robinson is going to give you at least 2 seasons of good production. He has a lot of options for a 3rd year to take, but all of them offer something good.

DoctorKz...Ozzie Smith is going to have one season where he hits way better than he should and he will have one season where he doesn't hit at all, but he will absolutely have 3 seasons where he plays great defense at SS and that is a nice thing to lock down.

Fusion27s...Jack Taylor is a solid pairing with Smith. He isn't quite a lock down as some of the old timers, but he is going to give a ton of innings where the offense will have to earn it to beat him. He is going to keep it in the park and he is not going to walk too many guys.

glowguy...Lefty Grove and Dean Chance. Grove's numbers don't really do him justice. He was so, so good. He's going to give at least 2 seasons of high production and solid innings in a third. Dean Chance is pretty similar in that you can absolutely count on 2 high value years from him and good enough production in the 3rd. A good duo to bring in in one round.

happyhours...Bob Gibson is a pitcher I had in the last Pai. He is going to thrill and frustrate you. He really can't live up to his big year but everytime you put him out there, you expect greatness. Then you will get it in streaks, then it will go away. Enjoy the ride.

kbosch...Eric Gagne has perhaps the best closers season history has to offer. He also has 2 other seasons that are really, really good too, which makes him a terrific pick.

ledfoot...Pete Browning gets ledfoot in the game! After 2 empty rounds you swoop in and get 3 seasons of >.360 BA. Not a bad way to kick off the build.

MAZZILLI16...Jose Altuve and Edgar Martinez. Altuve is 3 good offensive years and is a great fit with what is already in place. I do find it odd that his 2020 season is better rated defensively than 2017, but that is not relevant to this. Edgar is a rock. The hard part will be picking which years to go with for seasons 2 and 3, but no matter what I would be willing to bet he drives in 100 runs in all 3 leagues.

mllama54...John Smoltz and Dwight Gooden. Having the options Smoltz gives you is great for building. He can give you 3 outstanding bullpen years or you can tap him to be a starter if you have an innings need. Gooden and Clemens in the same rotation. In reality it would be a can't take your eyes off of it carnival. And they would win games.

njbigwig...Cap Anson and Willie Keeler. Anson is super productive, plus the added bonus of being able to use him at catcher (not a gold glover, to be sure) in some seasons if any fatigue issues pop up or you have a stud part time 1B you want to get some ABs for. Willie Keeler hits. And hits. And hits (had him in the last Pai). I wish he wasn't so bad in the field (make no mistake, he will hurt you if he's out there too often), but his bat gives you so much.

nocomm999...Harry Heilmann and Jonathan Papelbon. The shadow of Cobb takes away some of the love this guy should get from history. What an offensive machine. No less than 5 >1.000 OPS years to choose from, although the 3 to go with are pretty straightforward. Papelbon was actually a really dominant closer for a stretch of time. He was also a jerk and a bit of a clown that was not all that enjoyed by teammates. The good news is that won't factor in here and what you will get is 3 great bullpen seasons.

northof49...John Clarkson and Joe McGinnity. So you just get to round 3 and find a million great innings. Each gives a top notch season for consideration, with Clarkson offering one of the seasons. Interested in seeing the seasons and pairings you go with.

pedrocerano...Hal Newhouser, Stu Miller, and Nomar Garciaparra. For whatever reason, Hal Newhouser performs like a stud more often than not in the SIM. He is a fantastic get here as you end up with 900+ innings with a great chance to not underperform. Stu Miller is a very solid bullpen bridge arm that gives quality and volume. Nomar, I would dare say, was Hall of Fame bound if only the 1st 5 years of a players career counted. So, since you only need 3 years, you get a HOF SS.

The Taint...Craig Kimbrel is almost unthinkable. His numbers in several seasons are off the charts, comically good. Fortunately for opponents, there is usually one stat in each season that prevents him from being full on Superman. Still, a really good pick here.

thunder1008...Freddie Lindstrom gives you two top notch 3B years and then a lot of good options for what to do with his 3rd season. This pick got in the way of my plan to take Lindstrom next round.

tigerrott...Catfish Hunter, in a game rich with cool nicknames throughout history, stands on the mountain top with a select few. What sounds more BA than Catfish Hunter? Is he going to give up home runs? Yes he will. Is he still going be an anchor on all 3 pitching staffs? Yes as well.

ybjsports...Rickey Henderson thinks Rickey is a good pick. One of the few base stealers as a real weapon there is and a guy that will be on base to do it. Rickey also thinks there are so many different seasons to use of Rickey that Rickey gets confused.

Round 3 winner: close call, but we're going pedrocerrano. Newhouser just does too well consistently to not appreciate. Miller fills the middle of a staff and Nomar is a stud at SS. Hitting on 3 things in one round like that is a winner.

Roughest Round: me. Not that Scherzer is terrible, but I rushed this round and didn't make the picks I wanted to. Obviously, I am in on the behind the curtain info of my draft room and this may apply to anyone and everyone else at any time, but I knew then and still know I blew this round.

Round recap:
barracuda3...Miguel Cabrera is the kind of thumper that tends to lose against the dead ball guys, which there a lot of here. Luckily, there are a lot of other pitchers too and Cabrera has a ton of options to use to assault them.

beauchamp...Ron Santo, Bill Bernhard, and Garry Templeton. Coming off back to back empty rounds, playing it safe and going for bulk was a good play. This is a solid haul of at bats, gloves, and innings. Obviously not "Babe Ruth" splashy, but solid now prevents desperate later.

big_dowg...Whitey Ford was as winner-y as a winner gets. He is going to give 3 seasons of competitive innings and good depth to the staff.

cholatse...Warren Spahn and Billy Wagner. Spahn is the kind of guy that gets hit but he will give you a ton of good innings as well. His OAV and possibly ERA won't be pretty, but I'd wager he will hit double digit wins in all 3 leagues. Wagner frustrates me because he should dominate and often falls short of that. He can still be very, very good but I want him to be lights out.

DoctorKz...George Davis, Billy Herman, and Chris Sale. George Davis is a steady bat in any lineup. More often than not your going to get enough out of him to be satisfied with having him. Billy Herman is underrated in my opinion, but also can be a bit of feast or famine. He can give you a .400 season but every once in a while throws in a .200 clunker. He is decent enough at 2B to make him a very good addition. I love Chris Sale, so I have to call this a great get. I think in this format his best contribution will come in long relief/spot start duty, but it will be a worthwhile one.

fatboydad54...Dan Brouthers, Frank Baker, and Bob Feller. Brouthers is going to hit a ton. One of the most consistent bats from his era and a really good get for the 4th round. Home Run Baker is one of the original sluggers and a pretty steady sim performer. Certainly a good guy to lock up here. Bob Feller is (IMO) slightly overvalued by history. But he can give a whole lot of innings and he can keep it out of play, which translates pretty well here. Solid round.

Fusion27s...Mickey Welch gives you one of those epic seasons and one other really great year. The third season is not pretty, but you get a staff hog on two-thirds of your trilogy. With plenty of pitching still available, this is a score. (as evidenced by the fact that I tried to draft him next round)

glowguy...Harry Brecheen gives one good starter season and one good long relief season. Given the amount of pitching this team has already nabbed, this is a solid pick up because he is not needed to shoulder the load.

happyhours...Orvall Overall and Zach Britton. Watch out, we have a staff being put together here. Overall is an under the radar big time producer that has three top notch seasons. With Sutton and Gibson already in the fold, he won't have to outduel aces either. Nice get. Britton fits the bullpen mold here, as he has enough good seasons to be effective, but has one that is bona fide shut down closer.

kbosch...Vida Blue and Dazzy Vance. Blue has the one dazzler year and it will be glorious. He also has a decent inning eating season and a short inning bullpen season that will make him useful across all 3 leagues. Vance is just really good in a way that you know what you will get. He won't win a Cy Young, but I'd bet he pitches for more than one playoff team. Coupled with what this owner has already drafted, I'm calling this team a threat to win already.

MAZZILLI16...Johnny Pesky gives you a steady performer for 3 leagues. His glove is great, but his best years are position specific which is great if you need a SS for 1 or 2 seasons and a 3B for one season. Hard to view him as anything but a positive though.

mllama54...Joe Medwick has 3 great seasons to choose and 1 of those is a lead dog type of year. Glove doesn't hurt you. This is a really good pick.

njbigwig...Dave Bancroft is not likely to light up the offensive leaderboard in this format, but he will give you outstanding defense everyday in all 3 leagues at a position that is drying up fast.

nocomm999...Jeff Bagwell and George McQuillan. Bagwell is not going to hit as many home runs as you'd like, but he is still going to hit for a decent average across 3 leagues and will have a high OBP. Very useful in this format. McQuillan will give you one great starter season, one great bullpen season, and one season that could go either way. Knowing what to expect in 2 leagues is pretty good though.

northof49...Jason Giambi and Robin Roberts. Giambi is another guy that wont hit as many out as you think he should, but he will get on base a lot and slug enough to make himself useful. Roberts gives you a lot of innings, but he gets hit pretty hard. The one thing he has is that sneaky good bullpen season that almost always puts up great numbers.

pedrocerrano...Whit Wyatt and Takashi Saito. Wyatt is a dependable sim performer. One standout year and some solid contributor seasons make him a good asset. Saito has 2 outstanding bullpen years that can fit in any role you want to use him in. Getting a great 3rd year is a stretch, but probably not needed anyways.

The Taint...Derek Jeter and Jim Bunning. Jeter is not my favorite, but in this format he certainly provides 3 serviceable years to make him effective at an important position to not reach at. He'll probably have one year hit .340, one hit .290, and one frustrating year where he hits about .240. Bunning is a lot like a handful of pitchers that went this round. Innings you can count on to grind out a season, but he will get hit pretty hard from time to time.

thunder1008...Hank Aaron is Hank Aaron. The drawback, if you can call it that, is picking the right 3 seasons. He has a standout year, but it comes with a weaker glove. He has multiple seasons that are right around the same productivity, and he will produce accordingly.

tigerrott...Jake Arrieta isn't a high innings guy, but he is a quality guy, especially in one season. Given what this team already has, he only needs to be steady good and he will be a big success.

ybjsports...Pete Rose and Hack Wilson. Rose is a great pick to me because he can be just about anything you need him to be and still be good at it. While locking down 1 position is great, being able to fill in many positions with a 1 season need is a huge plus too. Hack Wilson, by nature, will not live up to his numbers. He was such a monster, being just a regular slugger feels like a let down. I've had him, I know. If you take his numbers as they will end up, you'll be happy. If you want them to look like his actual numbers, invest in Tylenol.

Round 4 winner: I went back and forth with 3 owners, but I'm going with kbosch. Blue and Vance give you so many good innings and in multiple roles. Round winners are hard to single out just one, but winner is not plural.

Roughest round: ledfoot is 1 for 12. Plenty of time to make up ground and tons of talent still out there, but an 0 for 3 here hurts.

Round recap:
barracuda3...Fred Lynn and John Olerud. Both players a similar in that they both will only give you two seasons of play worthy baseball. On the plus side in both cases is that those two seasons are above average and finding one season plug ins at OF and 1B isn't impossible by any means.

beauchamp...Max Carey, Vada Pinson, and Steve Carlton. Carey is a solid 2 season performer with options that are good enough for a 3rd year. Vada is traditionally a guy that overperforms in the sim, so this is a sneaky good pick here. It wouldn't surprise me if midway through a season without any attention, he will be hitting about .390. Carlton was so good that one year. The amount of weight he carried for an awful team should be factored in to his sim performance if you ask me. He also give a very solid 2nd season that will keep you in games all year long. His 3rd year will likely get tattooed but innings aren't usually an issue in this format and he can be hidden accordingly.

big_dowg...Mike Cuellar and Ralph Kiner. Cuellar has the 1 season ace level year. It holds up well usually. His other two season are fence riders in that they could get hit hard or they could grind out decent years. He and Perry are a good pair. Kiner is a rare big time slugger that can translate through mixed-era play like this. Don't get me wrong, he is not hitting 50+ anywhere, but he will still get his share in comparison to most. Good pick.

calhoop...Lance Berkman, Manny Ramirez, and Reb Russell. Berkman and Ramirez define the modern slugger. Berkman will very likely have good success getting on base and give decent production. Manny, while legitimately considered one of the greatest right handed hitters ever, is a feast or famine guy in the eyes of the sim. He can give you .375/.440/.600 and he can give you .198/.318/.375. He deserves better. Reb Russell is an era pitcher that will keep it in the ballpark and give you solid innings. The drawback is he really only gives you two years good enough to use here. The solution is the awesome year he has as a part time outfielder. It's perfect.

cholatse...Lefty Gomez is the other Lefty G of his era. Too bad just wins didn't matter, he'd be godly. As it is, what you will get is 3 years of innings. He will be hit, but he does keep in in the yard, so he gives you a chance to make plays.

DoctorKz...Madison Bumgarner, Goose Goslin, and Heinie Manush. Bumgarner is going to get treated like too many modern pitchers, which is to say unfairly. He's good, but his numbers are probably going to be disappointing. Goslin and Manush absolutely rake though. This is such an awesome pair to land this deep in the draft. Both are going to give at least two seasons of extremely satisfying numbers. This lineup just got a little dangerous.

fatboydad54...Jim Rice and Bob Lemon. Rice does have a season that I like a lot, not the season you may think. He can be plugged in to an lineup and give you a chance for production. He will also have at least one season where it seems like all he does is strike out. Lemon I consider a sim twin with Feller (not in Ks, obviously). If you like the Feller pick, you like the Lemon pick. It mostly depends on control. If the game lets him throw strikes he's going to be OK, but if he walks a bunch of guys it is going to lead to trouble.
