Unified Theory of Politics Topic

The better you are at math the more likely you are to be conservative. (it is acceptable to replace math with logic, I mean logic as a field of learning.)

The more emotional you are the more likely you are to be liberal (tendency to choose beliefs/make choices due to emotional reasoning).

This is said in layman's terms, but I think it's the most profound thing you'll read on these boards.

This is a fine theory, guitarguy. I would love to see what evidence you have for it.

Here's some counter-arguments.
1. Conservatives are more motivated by fear - this has been proven through a myriad of studies and methodologies. Oftentimes, this singular focus on fear can be irrational and, dare I say it, emotional.
2. Conservatives are also more motivated by disgust - again, this has been proven through multiple studies with differing methodologies.
3. Conservatives tend to dislike uncertainty and ambiguity - liberals are more nuanced.
4. Republicans have been found to use less data and use more emotional arguments in speeches than Democrats (although I have some problems with the study that found this).
5. As for the emotional reactions that liberals do tend to have - empathy, compassion, etc. (no this is not me making these judgements, this has been found through research), I would argue that they are much more positive and will end with better policy than emotional responses based on fear, disgust, and anger. Conservatives DO have lower levels of emotional intelligence. I do not think this is a good thing.
6. Have you listened to Donald Trump over the past four years? Every speech, it's emotion, appealing to feelings, trying to make you angry and fearful. How often does he speak through truth or logic?

Or, to use CCCP-speak: "I was good at math, and I'm on the left. I knew people in high school and college who were horrible at math, and they are conservatives who voted for Trump. REEEEEEEEE!"

The majority of those who don’t go to college are republicans.

that’s a fact jack.

To be fair, going to college isn't a reliable indicator of how logical you are.

Again, I work at what I believe is the largest single agglomeration of science and engineering Ph.D.s in the country. As federal employees we have to be fairly careful about discussing politics on work time/grounds, but it is generally clear that the employees as a group lean pretty far left. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a group of a few thousand people better at mathematical and logical thinking.

I also find this to be a rather interesting take from a guy who seems to commit several obvious logical fallacies in this forum pretty much every day.

And on top of that, this is just another example of trying to demonstrate - without any evidence - why the people on your side are the good guys, and the other side are bad. It's kind of ironic.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

Speaking of the people on your side, I'm curious .. have you (and by you I mean anyone willing to answer) have you always been on the side you're on or did you have a journey to your current perspective? I know that my own path has meandered over the years ... has yours?

I think the looting and violence on the streets since June, still nearly a nightly occurrence in places like Seattle and Portland, demonstrates very clearly who the bad guys are.

Our VP-elect has supported it to. Very disgusting stuff. Mobs running rampant.

ABSOLUTELY!!

I walked the streets of my own neighborhoods in 1976 for Ronald Reagan. (He LOST!)
4 yrs later I did the same thing for Jimmy Carter. I still have the little green Carter button. (He also LOST!)

What changed??

My intellect mainly.
I grew, smartened up some.
Started paying attention to more stuff than Girls and Baseball.
Got into the musical arts.

I LEARNED how dumb I had been and started reading more.
Thirsting for truth!
I learned how $$$ dominates politics and where the $$$ comes from that goes to the two major parties.
I gradually learned I could NOT stomach the vast majority of Republican ideology.

Their manipulation of known truth to deceive and "control" the masses whom they FEAR to truly grant the freedom to live their lives FREELY (as THEY see it) is dishonest to its core and hugely insulting IF you are aware they are doing it!

Many are too stupid to know they are being deceived.

I could make several logical arguments explaining why this is clearly not a justification for giving Republicans the moral high ground, but you've clearly already become emotionally/quasi-religiously connected to your own conclusions and overall belief system.
12/20/2020 9:40 AM
Correction, emotionally/quasi-religiously connected to my logical interpretation of the current political landscape...one defined by evil and society-destroying, tradition-annihilating leftism that will, despite the naive intentions of its adherents, usher in a new dark age that will afflict mankind for hundreds if not thousands of years going forward. How do I know this? Logic. 2+2=4
12/20/2020 10:07 AM
And your evidence for this is that a small fraction of leftists are protesting in a way that you don't like and no one else supports.
