Greetings,

I'd like to put together a schedule/guide to all the tasks an owner should be doing with their team. Some will be dependent on the point in the season, like moving players when rosters expand. Others are things like "verify all your relief pitchers have the box checked to pitch in relief" and "optimize your pinch hitting hierarchy." A third group of tasks are things like going thru your minor leagues to see who should be promoted. It's the oddball ones likely to be overlooked that are the most valuable things to add (e.g. making sure your pitcher isn't batting 5th like I did for about two weeks!) Then I'd like to have a column for frequency, such as weekly/every off day/every transaction/3 times per season....stuff like that.

So, does anyone know if such a list already exists that can be refined/enhanced? If not, please comment with anything you think should be added.

I have one of these that I use for myself which I'm always editing/adding to...and I'm going to include as much of it as I can in the other thread that I started, but like I said in my sitemail to you a few minutes ago I would like to hear from you with specifics so that I have a better idea of what kinds of questions new owners may have.

Once there are a dozen seasons under your belt, the checklist will be engrained in your head. Especially if you run more than one team. Based on my own experience and from the trends I see on the boards, the most frequent: steps that people forget are signing arb3 guys to long term contracts on the day after budgets lock; re-hiring coaches; protecting players from rule 5 draft; forgetting to set up draft board until the "amateur draft fast approaching" email hits; forgetting to set up minor leagues; forgetting to setup rookie league after the amateur draft; forgetting to re-sign free agents before the season ends resulting in them entering free agency the following season.

Sorry to be facetious, but dammit, it's already written out.

The world schedule addresses certain things, like Amateur Draft approaching, but not the small things, like if you add a pitcher and forget that his pitch count defaults to "none". Plus there are some once-a-week type things to check on. And I've seen veteran owners forget some of these things, posting "how come this pitcher hasn't pitched" when it was cuz he didn't check the relief pitching box....just a reference doc, not a bible.

Damag is kinda right, but I think WIS could improve the new owner wiki.

However....I think you need to start your own checklist. And then make sure you check it every day. And improve on it every season. The information is out there. And veteran owners are willing to help.

I actually look at it quite a bit. Typically, it's because I want to know when the draft is.

I made alot of trades my first season. I also won the ws that season. It was a new world. Trading is the best part in the game for me.

I made alot of trades my first season. I also won the ws that season. It was a new world. Trading is the best part in the game for me.

I made a couple of trades my first season also, didn't win the WS but made a good run in the playoffs. I would say trades are okay but definitely be skeptical of owners proposing unsolicited trades.

In my first season I got something like 5-6 trade offers (from the same owner) aging vets for my stud young pitcher. After exploring a bit I realized that the owner making these offers had won the WS some crazy number like 9 out of the last 11 times.

There are exceptions, but if new players started with the general premise "I'm going to learn my team, my franchise, what my budget gives me confidence to understand, and what all those attribute rating numbers mean" I think there will be better chance for long term enjoyment. And not "ooh, that awesome owner in the other league wants to help me get better and win sooner by trading that former 3 time AS for some kid who I didnt even know I had or cant use for many seasons...wow what a fantastic world I joined."
