Last 2 innings of Don Cardwell no-hitter 1960 Topic

A very wild scene at Wrigley. He was the first pitcher to ever pitch a no-hitter on his first start for a new team after being traded. Two days after being traded by the Phillies for Tony Taylor, he pitched a no-hitter for the Cubs against the Cardinals.

This video shows him overpowering Stan the Man, and shows an at-bat by Ernie Banks as well. But the highlight is the absolutely wild scene at Wrigley after the game is over:

Wow, fans storm the field to take part in the celebration. Try that today. That was 2nd game of a doubleheader so the fans stuck around to watch a pretty horrible Cubs team. Could not tell which way the wind was blowing but it looked like the ball Sawatski (?) hit for the 2nd out in the 9th had a chance of leaving the park. The 3rd out featured a running shoestring catch by LF’er Moose Moryn to save the no hitter.

Nice. My takes :

Stan Musial. Word.

Covid super spreader crowd control.

Back in the day on-air commentator product pimpin; travel brochures, gasoline : "Put a tiger in your tank !"

As they're taught to do primarily so their competition doesn't see them sweat, Caldwell's kool as a cucumber demeanor while simultaneously peeing his uni. Trust me. Known plenty of pro ballers with never let 'em see ya sweat stories. One of the best was a fresh-faced 22-year old call-up pitcher who after a red-eye flight and no sleep was thrust into the 9th inning of his debut. On spur of the moment we couldn't get an out of area tv network for the broadcast but gathered around an AM radio with tons of static, when he was announced as trotting in from the bullpen I told everyone holy sheet Tim Raines is the first batter ! Recalling the moment later, rookie upon seeing Raines stroll to the plate he said "Holy sheet that's Tim Raines!". Commence pant-peeing as he walked to the back of the mound and stared out at center field for 10 seconds but really 10 years.
