RIP Marvelous Marvin Hagler, one of the all-time greats of boxing. Hagler grew up on the streets of Newark, New Jersey, moved to an industrial town of Massachusetts, where he learned to box to protect himself from bullies. Denied the opportunity of a title fight, he got one only after Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill, and Senator Ted Kennedy wrote to the corrupt boxing czar Bob Arum, threatening a Congressional investigation. When he finally won the World Middleweight Championship, in Britain against Minter, a racist crowd rioted, and he was denied the chance to stand in a ring with his fist raised and a championship belt around his waste, having instead to flee for his life with his trainer and entourage. His fights with Tommy Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard rank with the greatest of all-time, and, as much as I like and admire Sugar Ray, everyone knows that Hagler should have been awarded the victory that night. In the end, disillusioned by a world that never gave him a fair shake, he retired to a small town in central Italy. He passed away today, at age 66. If you have never seen him fight, look his fights up on Youtube, but be warned, a Marvin Hagler fight is not for the faint of heart.

Hagler's fights really were entertaining.

I'm not sure if it's because I got older and softer, or the sport got duller, but around the time Tyson took a bite out of Holyfield's ear I started to lose interest in boxing. I don't think I could name two active boxers right now.

The 70's was the heyday of the Heavyweight division. The 80's brought us great middleweight fighters...
Hagler, Leonard, Hearns and Duran. All outstanding in their own way.

Joe Rogan made mention of Marvelous running along the Cape Cod sand screaming "War!" as he trained...he was a beast.

I recall the '85 HIt Man v. Hagler bout like it happened yesterday. Had seen Hearns back in the Kronk gym in the late 1970s.... He was Detroit's darling and the anticipation leading up to the big fight was huge. Still the best match I've ever seen. Hagler, Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Roberto Duran, all middleweights competing at the same time. We haven't seen the likes of that in decades, and probably won't again.

The Hagler-Mugabi fight was also something special.

There was a good period in the late 90s and early 2000s actually, and HBO Boxing After Dark had a lot of these fights. But most of the big ones are now only pay-per-view in one form or another, and mostly what happened was that on the one hand Floyd Mayweather Jr. was brilliant, but he was such a good defensive boxer that even for many of us that appreciate defense, his fights got boring and he way overmatched everyone he fought.

At the same time, the Klitschko brothers succeeded each other as heavyweight champs essentially and they defended the title very rarely and also had some boring fights.

So many of us started to lose interest...

True, the only one except for the first two minutes with Hearns where he seemed to be in trouble.
