The 2020/2021 Tournament: Round SEVEN Particulars Topic

With my two teams totally SUCKING in Round Six, it's not like I have to worry about what Round Seven is going to be like. Anyway...

For Round Seven, there will be one league of 24 teams.

Once the spots earned from Round Six have been tabulated and the owners are listed in how many wins their Round Six team(s) earned, there will be a draft order listed. This theme is loosely based on a theme that CONTRARIAN23 ran a while back and has given his blessing to my using a bastardized version of it here.

Here are the particulars:

Listed here are the seasons from 1901 through 2020 - grouped in tandems of two years each. Each owner will get five of these tandems to build his team roster with. It will be split up between National and American League which will provide 60 choices for each league. Also, the tandems are divided up into five different groupings. You must have one tandem from each of the five groupings.

Before we get to the tandem picking though, we have to figure out who is going National League and who is going American League. First off, I'll place the 24 owners in the order of who had the most Wins in Round Six. Then, starting with Number 1, they can decide if they want to go National or American. They don't choose which tandem they want yet - just which league they want to be in. Once we've determined which twelve will be National and which twelve will be American, we'll then start the two drafts in this draft order: 1-12, 1-12, 12-1, 12-1 and 1-12.

The person with the first pick in each league will choose which of the tandems he wants to start with - and which division (East, Central or West) he wants to be placed in.

VERY IMPORTANT: Here's where I'm throwing a wrench in the gears. Your first choice - you only get three players from that tandem. Your second choice - you only get four choices from that tandem. Your third choice - you only get five players from that tandem. Your fourth choice - you must have six players from that tandem. Your fifth and final choice - you must round out your roster with seven players.

To clarify, each person has to use one tandem from each of the five groups?

4/15/2021 3:58 PM
And, presumably if I'm reading this right, every tandem will be represented once in each league. Is that right?
4/15/2021 5:20 PM
Correct for both questions.

OK...I need to make sure I am getting this right. We will start by sorting owners into NL and AL. Do NL owners have to choose NL tandems? In other words, if I am in the NL and I choose 1901-02 with my #1 pick, does that automatically mean that I have the 1901-02 NL?

Or does the league we are in have nothing to do with the tandems we choose? In which case, regardless of which league I am in, with each draft pick I have to specify whether I want the AL or the NL players from that tandem?

I hadn't read it that you get either AL or NL with each tandem. I read it that you get anyone from those years.

But I am thinking now about the draft order: 1-12, 12-1, 1-12, 1-12, 12-1.

What jumps out at me is how the last two rounds veer from snake style and what that entails for Round 5. As I see this now, the team picking 1st is going to get stuck with the very last tandem and have to take 7 players from it. Is that really commensurate with getting top choice?

Wouldn't 1-12, 12-1, 1-12, 12-1, 1-12 be the fairer setup?

Pat, it would be helpful if you could clarify...might just be me, but I am very confused about how this round will work.
5/4/2021 4:19 PM
I'm pretty sure it's NL vs AL players. There are only 12 options in each of the five groups and he's already said Federal League players are not included, so whichever league you choose to be in, you are drafting only from that league's players.

As far as the draft order each round, I like this option 1-12, 1-12, 12-1, 12-1, 1-12. The top teams are getting the early picks for the 3 and 4 player groups. The bottom teams are getting the early picks from the 5 and 6 players groups. And the top teams get the 7 players, so that's 14 vs 11.

No word yet from thejuice6 on the draft order concerns?

I agree with redcped that with the last round getting seven players, it may be more advantageous to be picking at the end of the draft. I think a modification to the draft order may be necessary. Round 1 should definitely go 1-24.

The last few selections in Round 7 will be locked in (due to the "one team per group" rule) so the last few owners may not even get a choice and may get stuck with a team that has no useful players (that fit with the rest of his roster). This really penalizes those picking late in this round. (If the rule was 5 players per team, then thejuice's proposed draft order would be fine).

So I would either go 1-24, 1-24, 1-24, 24-1, 24-1 or 1-24, 1-24, 24-1, 24-1, 1-24.

Has anyone heard from Pat? I'm a little worried about him - very unlike him to not have checked in, especially with an open question like this. Can anyone see if he's opened any recent sitemails?

In any case, I will not be able to participate in round 7 of this tournament, so that may open a couple of additional slots.

I found this post from him a week ago that explains his absence:

" I'm glad this is finishing up when it is. I'm getting on a plane in five hours and will have spotty wi-fi over the next nine days. "

I often wonder where people go when they say they have little or no access to internet.

I assume one of two things:

A) Places I don't generally go because they involve more communing with nature than I'm used to; or
B) Places I can't afford to go that are luxurious and off the grid.

Then again, the last time I can recall being in that situation was about 15 years ago on the Big Island of Hawaii, though not staying anywhere luxurious at all. Just with a family member who lives in an old plantation house in a tiny village with no home phone or internet. We had to go to the internet cafes in town every few days.
