Riddle me this ...

How (and why) does a D1 in Louisiana turn up on a D3 transfer in Michigan ... in the only the second cycle of second session recruiting ... in the same cycle that he was cut ... and he was cut just 35 minutes before the end of said cycle?

The recruit is a fairly decent one year transfer albeit a D3 transfer.

Fishy?

a transfer w just one year left can be if interest tat D1 to fill a spot - they run fastbreak and press so another better than walkon matters to them - he is useful for them. D1 will win that if it has a chance to get involved

So I always forget...does previous effort count towards transfers? I'm thinking it's possible La Tech previously recruited him.

If not, it is a little weird, particularly because the coach would not have received the transfer notification.

Agree with fd on the logic behind a D1 going after a D2 or D3 transfer but the timing on this is a little suspect.

Are we sure the LaTech coach wouldn’t have received notification? I often receive notifications of recruits cut from D2 and D3 teams for my D1 teams, pretty sure they’re not all projected D1 pool players. With D1 population the way it is, the transfer market is absolutely fierce, so I really don’t think anything presented here indicates (to me) any nefarious activity, unless I’ve misunderstood something.

You do not get notices from transfers that are classified in a different division (doesn't matter what division the school they came from was).

This guy was classified D3.

and you don't get notices on transfers 1,000 miles away.

Do you have confirmation from WIS on that? I don’t think that’s true (on the divisions). I’ve seen so many really bad D3 transfers contact me, it’s hard to believe none of them were projected in the D3 pool if this guy was.

Even if it is, consider that this is a first year coach at the school, with a big new use-it-or-lose-it scouting budget for the second session. If the goal is to field a complete FB/P team, nothing wrong with trawling lower divisions for jucos and transfers. Many of us do that in our first season at a new school. It’s not cheating or suspect to scout lower levels with a D1 team, certainly not with that big budget in the RS2 of the first season. I mean submit a ticket if you really want to, but it’s not a good idea for the community to assume bad intentions or cheating of any kind, until it’s been investigated and confirmed.

So this is a bit of a side thought, but this conversation is making me think. Every transfer that has ever contacted me shows an F rating, so I always disregard them. Should I be looking at them a little closer?

Yes. They always have F ratings, no matter how good they are.

This is an absolute-

You ONLY get notices from transfers that are classified in your division and within your proximity (distance may vary depending on your location).

ps- The school they transfer from has no bearing on their classification.

The question is NOT whether a D1 is ok recruiting a D3 (one years are always attractive).

The mystery would be how was he discovered.

Where is that info disclosed?

I've always assumed that you can see transfers from any division. I've received transfer notification from all 3 divisions at my schools.

Unless you're referring to their original pool classification? And NOT the school they are transferring from?

There’s no real mystery, as far as I’m concerned. You come in as a new coach to RS2 looking to fill 2 slots, maybe you want *cheap* 1-year transfers, because you have a FB/P system. You aren’t going to get them among the D1 pool, so look at lower divisions. FSS a bunch of D2 and/or D3 states, use the advanced recruit search to look for where the transfers are, and figure out if you want them. You don’t need a lot of money to figure it out, either, but a new coach in RS2 has plenty to cover a LOT of ground via FSS. Then use the well-known game log trick to figure out if you want the guy or not, instead of spending more on scouting him up.

I know the timing bothers you but I don’t think that really should, either. I mean think about when guys are going to be cutting players. Right before the first couple cycles run is a great time to scout for transfers. Maybe do it for a bunch of D2 states the first cycle, if nothing works out, try again with D3 the 2nd cycle. Sounds brilliant to me.

Phalla is referring to the pool classification, and may be correct, but I’d like to see verification, because I can tell you with 100% certainty I have guys who are a lot worse than both of the D3 pool transfer players LA Tech signed contact me every season. I don’t pay any attention to their pool though.

You don’t need to be contacted by a transfer to discover them.

Team Ratings... less than 12 players... search boxscore... find player who isn’t currently on the roster. Want to recruit him? Scout his home state for the pool he’s in.
