Understanding an unsigned draft pick... Topic

Greetings,

Trying to make sure I've got this right regarding a pick who won't sign and want to be sure to get the replacement pick the next season...

To qualify, you have to make the offer which meets his demands...and leave that offer open all season. Let's say he wants a $1mm signing bonus. So, you make the offer and leave it open. It means you're going to lose that money, right, because you can't use it on an IFA or anything...it's just going to sit there and expire at the end of the season?

Or, is there a point in time when you can spend it elsewhere?

Thanks!

At some point he will formally reject your offer and the little symbol/icon turns into an X.
He may reject it outright ("I'm going to play basketball even though I'm 5 foot 6"). If he wants more money, just don't offer.
So the money you offered originally is available to you, you just need to be patient.

ok...I've had that happen with other picks, just not the early round ones. Do they always formally reject, or are there times where the season just ends and you haven't made alternative use of the cash?

They will always reject right away. But you can't ever withdraw that offer or else you won't get a comp pick (first-, second- and third-rounders only; failing to sign a compensation pick for a free-agent signing does not net another comp pick).
