How can a 84Def/64Ath PG get in foul trouble and give up double figure points in every single game?
How can a 100Per/67Ath go 20/72 (28%) from 3 for the entire pre-conf schedule?
How can a team with avg 70+ stamina get exhausted against teams playing slowdown offense?
WHAT AM I MISSING?
i'm going to go in a different order here.
4) fatigue, fatigue, fatigue! stepping back, you are playing mostly quality humans with a team that was recently sim ai for a bit, and you are changing defenses... the expectation is you will lose most of those games. as was mentioned, press is a very high risk/reward set - its fantastic when its good. but right now your press iq is awful. your team is getting tired, and the fatigue penalty is HUGE. any time you see your guys in orange and red on a regular basis, expect to be losing that game. i'm honestly not even sure why your team is so tired, i mean they are, and that is why you are losing. but they shouldn't be THAT tired.
your depth chart page more or less has to be a major problem. are you running fatigue with everyone on fairly fresh, with a fully filled out depth chart with backups spread around to help you tolerate foul trouble (i know the answer is no but didn't dig to find which parts). its *essential* you fix that, because you have guys in red all over the place and it is just not justified by your team fundamentals.
to be clear, with fatigue that bad, your team will perform terribly in every way and literally nothing else matters. not giving you a hard time!! not trying to anyway. i just want to make sure you understand the magnitude of the issue, with fatigue like that your team should be playing terrible in every way, and they kinda are, and that's why. so fix that, throw out everything else that happened, and start to re-evaluate once you have a functioning rotation. feel free to post about what you ended up doing here, a picture perhaps, i'm happy to give you some detailed feedback.
1) fatigue. he'd be fine otherwise but press iq is a problem, so hes going to foul more from that. the thing i want to touch on here is 'give up double figure points in every single game'. you can't attribute that to a player in press, the press is a blended defense like zone, not a matchup set like man. the matchups matter some, but press rotations are weird, you are not going to have your starters consistently defending their starters, that sort of thing, so you really can't look at a box score and be like 'their starting SG is scoring a lot my starting SG must be the problem'. he's probably part of the problem, but its not so direct like man.
2) ath is not important for 3pt scoring. per, bh, and spd, and also offensive IQ, are the drivers of 3pt offense. rolen would be amazing if your fatigue wasn't crushing you. he should easily be north of 40% - this is a perfect example of how severely your rotation / fatigue is shafting you!!
3) your depth chart has to be a semi-disaster, but i already touched on that... 70 stamina sucks though, top tier press teams will start the year in the 78-82 range and finish 82-85 or so, with preferably 12 players and at least 7 from the 1-3. your back court depth is INSANELY important in press, and you don't have great depth there. 73 stamina at this point in the season is decent, but not good
one example though. a random one but still. go to your western kentucky game. in the 3rd fatigue box, rolen is red. i can roughly assume you had a guy get 2 quick fouls, to lead to this, because that is always what leads to it (unless you are running some crazy minutes rotation - with press you only run fatigue with fairly fresh). rolen is your SG, so probably your backup SG or PG is the foul trouble? let's see... fitzwater... he's your pg, got 2 quick. and then coy may at 12m. looks like he was a SF. so you were down 2 back court players quickly - which happens not that rarely, in press, especially with new press iq like you have. that is going to make your fatigue really bad! and there isn't a ton you can do about it.
however the rule of thumb with bad fatigue is, spread it around. the penalty for moderate fatigue is minor, but the penalty for heavy fatigue is very heavy. it really ramps up around yellow. you have to make sure your depth chart is filled out and balanced, so that players can slide around well when you run into foul trouble. look at the sub at 14:26. your whole team should be subbing out before this, which makes me wonder, are you possible running minutes or having players on getting tired and stuff? because that is a death sentence on press. anyway, rolen stays in - thats unacceptable - that implies the only guy you had to sub in for him was fitzwater, because that other dude didn't foul out yet. you have to let your guys slide over to the left, even if they suck (and back court is essential in press so if your back court sucks, you will suck, but not as bad as if you play on orange and red fatigue!!).
anyway i think that pretty much covers all the bases. bottom line - you are still learning the basics of press and a reasonable depth chart rotation - so don't sweat the other stuff too much. press can be amazing, but if its working against you, it can be really terrible. but you can turn a press team around quickly just with warm bodies. press is so powerful that as long as you have warm bodies to fill spots (to keep fatigue low), you'll be able to compete. stick with it and good luck! unless you want to switch to zone right now - you still have to fix your depth chart rotation - but that would be a reasonable course of action i guess.
