Re-signing a superstar Topic

It has been so many years since I've had a player this good that I can't remember the best way to keep him. Player Profile: Nick Jacobs - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports He already owns most of the league's single-season pitching records and he won his 5th Cy Young last year at age 26.

Nick wants $9M for his second year of arb or $9.5M x 3 for a LT contract. My goal is to keep him as long as possible. Is it better to arb him this time and then sign him for as long as possible for next year? Or should I grab the 3 years now? Or, I could try to offer him same contract but 4 or 5 years now--no idea if he'd take it.

What are the controlling attributes here? Patience (70) and makeup (60)?

Thanks.

The surest, safest thing to do is to arb him this season, and then sign him for his age 28-32 seasons next season. Regardless of how many years he is asking for, he will accept 5 seasons at the same annual salary.

The controlling attributes are probably patience and OVR; better players seem to hit the open market more. 70 patience seems unlikely to keep him around any longer than he has to; so take the 6 years you can get.

Finally, the loyalty tiebreaker is a pretty highly-rated one, so you are pretty likely to be able to sign him as a free agent to a max contract for his age 33-37 years, if you so desire.

Wow. 300 innings a season. How the heck did he lose 10 games in one season with an ERA below 2?

Thanks dedelman. That's good advice.

hockey1984, he was snake-bitten that season. Lost a ton of 1-0 and 2-1 games. We had a great team that year--we won the World Series! We only lost 51 games and he lost 10 of them. With good luck, he would have had a shot at 30 wins.

Same thought. How did you get him so cheap?
