Personally, i thought if I had a high draft pick, I would choose hitting first. It's because of the free agent pitcher. It's very easy to add a great pitcher to a bad pitching staff. Much harder to insert a great hitter to a lineup when you don't know if you'll have another player playing the same position.
I also went with this thought process (which is apparent when you look at my H vs P split). But in addition to getting a great free agent starting pitcher, you also control what your defense looks like.
In one of the few leagues where I selected a pitching group early, I grabbed the 1918 Bos/Was pitching staff (AL Lg 7). Picking 3rd overall, I was still able to get a great Ruth season (1926), but the defense on this team is absolutely terrible. So bad in fact, I am playing FA '18 Cobb at 3B. His defense (D/D) isn't that much worse than my other option, Tony Lazzeri (C-/D). My shortstop is D+/C+ and my second baseman is C/B-. (Of course, I'd still make the same chioice, due to the unique nature of this mixed liveball / deadball league).
