Stats on the Round 2 Draft Topic

This is where I will be posting stats related to the Round 2 draft.
9/25/2021 9:24 PM
This draft consisted of two rounds, one round to draft a hitting group and one round to draft a pitching group. How often was a hitting group drafted first vs a pitching group. Not surprisingly to most, pitching was drafted more frequently than hitting in the first round (56% vs 44%).

In case you were wondering if the person picking 12th skewed these numbers, it turns out that the first combo listed by the person picking 12th was a pitching team 9 times (compared to 7 times for a hitting group) - the same 56% as the overall percentage.
.
It is interesting to note that there was a notable difference between American League and National League. 63% pitching in NL. 50% pitching in AL.

And here is a grid that shows how often hitters vs pitchers were taken in the first round, by draft position. Three of the five #1 overall hitter picks was made by yours truly.

Here is a list that shows how many teams each person has, and how often they selected a hitting combo vs a pitching combo in the first round. It's clear that some of us had a specific mindset regardless of draft position.

Once rosters become available, I will post some data on the free agent selection. How often will the free agent come from the round 1 selection, pitcher vs hitter free agents, etc.

Interesting that I went hitting more often when I had a pitching mindset. I pretty much only went hitting though if a stud pitching FA was available.

Personally, i thought if I had a high draft pick, I would choose hitting first. It's because of the free agent pitcher. It's very easy to add a great pitcher to a bad pitching staff. Much harder to insert a great hitter to a lineup when you don't know if you'll have another player playing the same position.

Who was the stud pitching FA on that 1927 AL hitting group?

(I know you said "pretty much")

It will be interesting to see how the FA distribution turns out.

Ted Lyons. Maybe not a typical stud but very good relative to most pitchers of that era. 326 IP of 160 ERC+

I also went with this thought process (which is apparent when you look at my H vs P split). But in addition to getting a great free agent starting pitcher, you also control what your defense looks like.

In one of the few leagues where I selected a pitching group early, I grabbed the 1918 Bos/Was pitching staff (AL Lg 7). Picking 3rd overall, I was still able to get a great Ruth season (1926), but the defense on this team is absolutely terrible. So bad in fact, I am playing FA '18 Cobb at 3B. His defense (D/D) isn't that much worse than my other option, Tony Lazzeri (C-/D). My shortstop is D+/C+ and my second baseman is C/B-. (Of course, I'd still make the same chioice, due to the unique nature of this mixed liveball / deadball league).

Ahh, yes - when compared to the non deadball pitchers in this league, he would be considered a stud.

I didn't try to figure out my FA until the second pick (except taking the 2002 pitching staff in order to add Bonds). I drafted so early in R1 (mostly 1st) so I couldn't really predict it. Also, with only 6 teams and the ability to pick where 5 of them went, I could choose leagues that worked the best for my approach of trying to ensure getting a very good pitching staff every time. We'll see if it works. A couple of these lineups are pretty uninspiring.

I did end up using one FA pitcher despite not really needing him. There just wasn't a useful FA hitter from 1909, so I piled '10 Walter Johnson onto an already very deep pitching staff.
