The correlation coefficient with respect to draft order is only +0.25. I thought it would be much higher. The gregression model for expected wins (thru 20 games) produces a range of 11.1 wins (#1 pick) to 8.9 wins (#24 pick). Here is the current stats based on draft position...

Note that the four teams drafting 24th have 8, 8, 10, 10 wins (two teams just missing round 5). The four teams drafting 13th have 9, 9, 9, 10 wins (also just missing round 5). The four teams drafing 22nd have 13, 13, 11, 10 wins.

It appears I have once again over-estimated my teams' abilities. I have 5 teams (out of 15) that are playing "well" (90+ win pace). I have six teams that are mediocre (i.e., +/-1 game from .500). And the remaining four teams probably have no chance at sniffing .500. One of the mediocre teams, 1902, was the #2 overall pick. I guess I should have went with Delahanty over Siever since 1902 is ranked dead last in the NL in runs scored, even behind offensive "juggernauts" 1904, 1905 & 1906.

Five of my six teams are at least over .500 through 32 games. If I advance 3 or 4, I’d be happy. But what I really hope is at least one team can get up to a strong pick spot for next round. Having a few middling picks likely sets them all up for elimination, and you at least want a seat in the championship round.

I am having a really hard time understanding how glowguy's 1906 team is hitting as well as they are. Based on the OPS# numbers, this team should be the worst offense in the NL. OK - I know they are paying in an offensive stadium "Palace of the Fans", so I am looking at just their away stats. That team is ranked 3rd in the entire league in "away OPS". My 1902 team is rankled 17th in "away OPS" despite their OPS# numbers being ranked 6th in the NL. We've essentially face the same pitchers and when I played 1906, we went 2-2 and scored the same number of runs, so the difference isn't due to our respective pitching staffs.

Okay I know I am not in the elite class of team drafting - but for the sake of amusement I will discuss my train of thought

First off, as logical as it may seem, I do not use OPS# to draft. I have used it in the past and was disappointed.

I seem to have more success with a combination of
OPS + and OBP+ (Although avg+ seems to be as important sometimes as obp+)

Why? Perhaps using the + factors lines them up in a similar grouping within the league. But No matter what I have a reasonable expectation of how a team may fair

So - for your consideration my 1906 athletics/Phillies/Reds

1- Roy Thomas CF 127 OBP+ (Over 120+ is very good)
2- Miller Huggins 2B 122 OBP +

so the table setters # 1 & 2 are both very good at reaching base for the RBI guys

3- Honus Wagner SS 134 OBP+ 141 OPS+
considered elite in both categories-a great # 3 hitter

4- Harry Davis 1B 131 OPS +. Another great RBI hitter

5 Sherry Magee OF 122 OPS+ once again above 120+ makes him desirable


6 Cy Seymour 110OBP+ 116 OPS + ( admittedly no big deal - nice glove though

7 Socks Seybold 121 OBP + 126 OPS + ( both numbers above 120+ make him desirable as DH)


8 Jim Delehanty 3B. 120 OBP+ 119OPS+
tAken in combination he is pretty good
although probably hitting over his head to this point

9- my two catchers are no big deal in the hitting department

10. My reserves of Topsy Hartsel 120OBP+
Hans Lobert 118 OBP+ 118 OPS+
John Titus 122 OBP+ 116 OPS +
Shad Barry 114OBP+ 117 OPS +

I Consider them to be pretty good and might even start depending on matchups

I thought this team would have an advantage in the home ballpark but were unconsciously fantastic in the away ballparks out of the gate - not sure if that can possibly continue

Thanks for posting. It does appear your 1906 normalized OBP+/OPS+ is certainly outperforming the standard "OPS#" formula. I know the # is also including normaliziation, but I've never analyzed the differences between + and #. Maybe I should.

In the past, I too have weighted OBP# more than it's normal weight in the OPS# formula (especially since OPS# includes HRs which in most leagues gets muted by deadball pitching). For this round in the tournament, I wanted to simplify my analysis since there was so much data to consider and I figured there would be more HRs allowed by mediocre pitching than in a normal theme league.

Sadly, the salary spreadsheet doesn't have the + fields listed, although with some effort, I could probably calculate those numbers. Since I already set up the spreadsheet to rank the teams, I may try to do something at the end of the season when the final results are in... to see which teams overachieved, which underachieved and see if there are any takeaways from that analysis.

I measure my success or failure based on how my 15 teams do, in aggregate, in each session. Of course, I am always hoping for a winning session.

If I go 10-5, I am thrilled.
9-6... great!
8-7... decent - just do that or better every session and all is good.
7-8.. ok, not ideal, but maybe some of my bad pitchers were throwing.
6-9.... Very bummed out.
5-10... Really upset... start checking to see how many 9th inning leads were blown.

I just went 5-10 and that includes 3-3 record from from my teams playing each other. So 2-7 vs all other opponents. And those 7 losses included zero late blown leads. I need a new emotional description for really awful performances.

Note that there are six teams below the line (for 3.5 playoff spots) which means the 3 or 4 teams currently ranked 45-48 would be out.

Although I didn't post it here, I calculated the standings through 40 games. My 2011 team (#1 pick in league 4) was 28-12 and ranked 3rd overall. Twenty-two games later, and they are ranked 40th overall. I guess a 3-19 run kind of hurts the rankings a bit (they actually went from 28-11 to 31-30 before finally breaking an L11 steak this last session). I can't ever remember seeing anything like it.... a 40-game stretch of being one of the best teams in the tournament, followed by a 22-game stretch of being absolutely the worst team in the tournament. They still have almost a .600 Expected Win% though, so maybe there's still hope for a turnaround.

The correlation coefficient for draft order vs wins is up to +0.28. For some reason, picks 5-8 aren't doing well, which is keeping this factor down.
