Designating player coming off DL Topic

I have a player coming off DL who previously cleared waivers. I would like to send him down. Is there any way to do this other than designating someone else, removing him from the DL, and then designating/demoting him? Doesn’t this cause the other player to be unable to go directly back on the ML roster?

Am I hosed till someone else goes on DL or the roster expands in 100 games?
