GB/FB and Pitcher Velocity Topic

I am not as experienced as most of you, but I feel I have a good grasp on the splits etc. I've developed my own pitcher valuation formula, and across all levels my staff typically finishes in the top 5 in most of the pitching categories (with the exception at a MLB level the last few seasons. (I've been waiting for minor league pitchers to develop, so I've gone with ok starters.)

My question, how do you think this pitcher will fair. Great on control, velocity, and groundball. Splits and pitches still developing. Based on my formula, he's number 5 in my rotation right now.

My formula has him as your 4th best SP, but overall I'd say that your evaluation is correct: his strengths are GB/VEL/Control and you'd want higher splits and pitches to make him indispensable so your formula seems pretty good. To answer your original question: a guy like this might take a few lumps in Montreal because that's a pretty hitter friendly park but whether or not you stick with him long term would be based on how high those developing ratings will get.

Thanks! He could very well be #4 now, as he was very close to my #4 when I initially generated the ratings. I tend to put some flexibility on my 3-5 guys when I assemble my rotations.

If he's nearing his ratings peak he's probably a mop-up/LRB guy on a contender or a backend starter on a rebuild. VEL is practically worthless (my understanding of the game engine is that a high VEL could turn a few potential fielding errors into K's but could also turn a few DP's into K's also. So kind of a wash and either way, it doesn't matter much since both situations are pretty rare occurrences). GB/FB is nice to have but isn't required if your other ratings are solid. If they don't have a solid vRHB and P1 you're in for some exciting outings.

Anybody know what gets considered first when determining out vs. anything else? Where does stadium factor land? Would a staff with a bunch of 80+ velocity pitchers help in a stadium like Santa Fe or Colorado?

I've read that out vs. hit is determined first, but where does a walk, error, poor play, hbp get determined? And, most importantly, where does the stadium turn an out into a single or the double into the homerun? Is the Staduim factor part of the out vs.hit tree or is it only after it?

So my formula equates to around 20% towards GB/FB and Velocity. Maybe because I play in a hitters ballpark, but I find the GB rating to be very useful. I've had pitchers with good splits in the past, but poor GB and it could be a string of 1 ER in 7 inning or 8 ER in 3 inning games.

I've read how very little PC for catchers factor in to success, but I find it very important.

Fantastic. Thanks Brianplath.

If I'm interpreting correctly, the big time hitter parks are going to have more homeruns and balls in play than other stadiums. The velocity rating will prevent some of these balls in play from becoming (-) plays or errors. The strikeout will also prevent some normal outs from becoming double plays, but what it won't do is prevent great fielders from making great plays on balls in play that are supposed to be hits. So, again if I'm interpreting this correctly, this logic confirms that having great defense at every position is even more important in an extreme hitter's park than any other park. As far as the velocity rating, I would say that having a high velocity rating is going help a poor defensive team more than it will help a great defensive team.

From a few conversations I had with adlorenz, that is the current decision tree the WIS staff is working with, but the new updates (when they come) will change this around a bit (I don't remember exactly, but I remember thinking they were going to prioritize ball in play vs strikeout in Step 2 with Step 1 still being Unusual Event vs Regular PA.)

I hope they share that piece once it's implemented.

I could also be mis-remembering, or the new ownership may decide to go in a different direction, but I'm fairly confident that's what adlorenz's goal was

I think GB/FB has a minimal impact outside of GDP. The decision tree posted above shows the sim determines out/hit first. All of the other ratings are going to help determine that outcome....vL,vR, control, pitches. GB/FB will impact the type of hit or out it is. Batter grounds it through the hole between 3rd and short or batter hits a liner into left field. Both are still hits just different types. A good pitcher with low GB/FB is still going to be a good pitcher. You can say well you wouldn't want him to pitch in Tucson because of the GB/FB....well every pitcher is going to give up more runs in Tucson.
