Where to put your worst OF (LF v RF)? Topic

I’ve struggled with this one for a while. I’ve read that “all hitters are pull hitters in WIS” but I’ve read SLB box scores where they’ve hit it out to opposite field. Will a D-/D- outfielder kill you more in LF or RF, or is it a wash?

I don’t have any data to back it up, but I’ve always put my worst OF in RF. I don’t think it’s gonna make a huge difference either way unless there are a lot of teams heavily weighted with righty or lefty hitters.

This game is predominantly RH pitching. Batters will tend to be LH hitting or switch hitters, at least against RH arms. They will be taking more balls to RF. I would go LF for my worst fielder. Try to avoid D- gloves whenever possible, they truly suck.

More simply RF get more chances than LF do.

Thanks! It’s a theme where we have to roster Frank Howard from his expansion franchise seasons, and he has to have the most RL HR on your roster. No DH so he’s going to produce a Dr. Strangeglove adventure out there.

No experiment is worse than Richie Allen at 2B. That was some kind of ugly.

The data at the statistical snapshots link on the lower right hand side of the 'team center' page contains a wealth of information regarding hitting, pitching and fielding. You might find it interesting:

Depending on the particular team I sometimes shuffle guys around given what my opponent's lineup looks like though only in rare instances

I don’t think I’ll try that one. I’m bummed he didn’t make the HOF while still alive. I hope he gets in the next time the era committee votes.

That was a very interesting link. Thanks!

To answer the question, I usually put my worst outfielder in Right field based on the notion that there are more right handed hitters pulling the ball to left field. However, experience has taught me that it doesn't really matter - if it's a late inning situation where you desperately need a win, the opposing team will invariably hit a deep flyball to the worst outfielder (wherever you try and hide him) who will then boot it for a 2 base error leading to a heartbreaking loss.

I’m looking forward to that. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The real kicker is there was enough cap room to have drafted a decent defender and relegate Frank to PH duty.

Depending on your theme limitations, I have found that sometimes it's better to put a 1B with fairly average or better defensive ratings in LF or RF than a truly awful fielding OF. I used a B+/B level guy there for a whole season and he made very few errors and even notched some plus plays. It's something I like to keep in mind in more restrictive themes or progressives.

Frank is rated the same at OF and 1b. I’ve got C/A- McGriff there. Do you think the team would be better with Frank at 1B and Fred in the OF?

No, I think 1b gets many more plays so I’d put the better defender there.

If a player has a high grade for +/- I put him in RF
and put the worst fielding OF in LF.
The RF should have the better arm and hopefully that is reflected in the +/-.
