When a FA can leave a team, what determines whether he becomes a Type A or Type B FA or just a regular Joe?

I believe ranked in top 10% at position = Type A
top 20% = Type B
Numbers may be off, but that's what it's based on

Does a player's age have anything to do with it? And is there any way to find these Top Rankings?

Age is not a factor. That’s why sometimes there will be stuff that is mind boggling. Like a 36 year old asking for 4 years and is a type A free agent.
