Opening in O.G. League 2X Progressive 85-86/86-87 Topic

The O.G. 2X Progressive League started in 1967-68 & is headed into its 19th & 20th seasons! Eight of our 12 franchises are still managed by their original owners, and this is the first time in our history that we've had to go public in searching out a new owner. This is your chance to join what several of our owners consider the funnest league on WhatIf...

Here is what makes the O.G. League unique:
  • There are only 12 owners/ franchises... How is this possible? Because we play two seasons at a time.. We are heading into our 85-86 & 86-87 seasons, which means you will manage one roster of players but field two teams: An 85-86 team in the Eastern Conference and an 86-87 team in the Western Conference.
  • Only 12 teams means the talent is much deeper.. Think about it: In a standard progressive league, there are 48 players selected in a two-round rookie draft.. Well, our drafts cover two draft classes, so even after four rounds only 48 players are selected, or only about 24 per regular draft class..
I'm going to paste our league rules in the next post so anyone who is interested can check them out in full if they want.

We are looking for an owner to take over our San Francisco Warriors franchise (all of our franchises maintain the name of the original 12 NBA franchises that began play in our inaugural year of 1967-68)... Here are the players the Warriors have "under contract" heading into the 85-86 & 86-87 seasons:

Charles Jones
Danny Ainge
Darrell Walker
Dennis Johnson
Derek Harper
Gene Banks
Kevin McHale
Kurt Rambis
Mark Eaton
Michael Cage
Mike McGee
Mychal Thompson
Walter Davis
Wayne Cooper

In addition, the Warriors have all of their future draft picks + two additional 2nd Round picks in the upcoming draft.. And to be clear, 2nd Round picks are highly valuable in this league, since there are only 12 franchises and rookies from 85-86 AND 86-87 are eligible to be drafted!

Our 83-84 & 84-85 regular seasons are almost over.. The Warriors are 35-43 (83-84) and 42-36 (84-85).. They might make the Playoffs in the 84-85 season (they are currently 1 game up on the Baltimore Bullets with four games left to play).. Regardless, they are guaranteed to be in the draft lottery with a 1-in-6 shot at the #1, 2, or 3 pick!! Plus they have three picks in the second round, meaning they will have a pick 1-6, plus another 3 picks in the 16-24 range...

Here are some of the players who will be in the upcoming draft (alphabetical by last name):
  1. Benoit Benjamin
  2. Manute Bol
  3. Joe Dumars
  4. Patrick Ewing
  5. A.C. Green
  6. Karl Malone
  7. Xavier McDaniel
  8. Chris Mullin
  9. Charles Oakley
  10. Terry Porter
  11. Detlef Schrempf
  12. Wayman Tisdale
  13. Spud Webb
  14. Michael Adams
  15. Dell Curry
  16. Brad Daughtery
  17. Johnny Dawkins
  18. Kevin Duckworth
  19. Craig Ehlo
  20. Ron Harper
  21. Jeff Hornacek
  22. Nate McMillan
  23. Johnny Newman
  24. Chuck Person
  25. Mark Price
  26. Dennis Rodman
  27. John Salley
  28. Scott Skiles
  29. Roy Tarpley
  30. Hot Rod Williams
If you want to join, send me a sitemail... Remember, you field two teams with the same roster of players: An 85-86 team and an 86-87 team.. If you have any questions, scan the rules below, they should answer them for you.. Thank you for your consideration!!!

Oh, I almost forgot: If you join the league and pay for your first two teams, I will send you a gift certificate for $9.95... And if you enter your teams again in 87-88 & 88-89, I will send you another gift certificate for $9.95... So you'll get 50% off your league entry fees for your first two 2X seasons.. Thanks!!

O.G. League Rules

These League Rules integrate the Anti-Tanking rules adopted ahead of the 73-74/74-75 2X Period. (Link to the old rules)

I. Franchises & Teams
  • There are 12 franchises.
  • We play two seasons at the same time, which we call a "2X Period."
  • Franchises field teams for both seasons in a 2X Period.
  • Draft picks, trades, etc. are made by franchises, not the individual teams
II. Franchises
  • Baltimore Bullets
  • Boston Celtics
  • Cincinnati Royals
  • Detroit Pistons
  • New York Knicks
  • Philadelphia 76ers
  • Chicago Bulls
  • Los Angeles Lakers
  • San Diego Rockets
  • San Francisco Warriors
  • Seattle SuperSonics
  • St. Louis Hawks
III. Team Name Format
  • Owners are to enter their teams in the following format: "99-00 San Diego Rockets" and "00-01 San Diego Rockets," in the 99-00/00-01 2X Period, for example
  • In honor of the old school, all franchises will forever keep their 67-68 team names.. Example: the San Diego Rockets will not evolve into the Houston Rockets
IV. Divisions and Conferences
  • All teams from the earlier of the two seasons will be in the Eastern Conference, and all teams from the latter of the two seasons will be in the Western Conference..
  • The franchises from the NBA's 67-68 East will be in the the WhatIf Atlantic and Midwest divisions, while the franchises from the NBA's 67-68 West will be in the WhatIf Central and Pacific divisions
V. The Draft
  • At the conclusion of each 2X Period, we will begin preparing for the next 2X Period's draft
  • All players who were rostered on at least one team in the previous 2X Period remain "under contract" to their franchise and are ineligible to be drafted.
  • All other players with WhatIf seasons in either of the 2X Period's seasons are eligible for the draft.
  • Drafts consist of four rounds. Franchises may use their draft picks even if they have 12 or more players for each of the seasons in the coming 2X Period.
  • After the fourth round, franchises that are unable to field two teams of 12 players may keep making selections in the Supplemental Draft until they're able to complete both rosters.
  • Players selected in the Supplemental Draft to fill a roster hole in one season may not be used in the other season, unless there is a specific need (i.e., minutes needed at a position)
  • Players selected in the Supplemental Draft will not be considered "best players" under Anti-Tanking Rules (see Section IX, B)
VI. Draft Timing
  • Round 1 will be totally "off the clock" until the 1st pick of the draft is made, and then it will continue to be off-the-clock with one caveat: If you don't make your selection within 24 hours, you will be contacted by sitemail. If you don't respond to that sitemail within 48 hours, you will be considered AWOL, and we may look for another owner for your franchise.. Note: You will not be required to make your 1st round pick within the 48-hour window, but you will need to respond and give me an idea of when you plan to make your pick.
  • Beginning in Round 2, you will be required to make your selection within 24 hours of the previous selection. If you don't, you will be skipped.
  • If the draft isn't completed by the start of the O.G. League Conference Finals, I will make a time schedule for the remaining picks that will begin at 11am following the Game 3s of the Conference Finals. Owners will be given 1-hour time slots, and a total of 12 picks will be scheduled each day. If you don't make your selection before the next owner's time slot begins, you may be skipped.
VII. Lottery Odds and Draft Rankings
  • Lottery odds and draft rankings will be determined by total franchise wins from the previous 2X Period, subject to Anti-Tanking rules
  • All division winners will be put at the end of the 1st round, with the division winner with the most franchise wins the prior 2X Period given 12th pick
  • Excluding division winners, the six franchises with the fewest combined wins, subject to Anti-Tanking rules, will be entered into the draft lottery and given equal odds of winning
  • Drawings for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd picks of the 1st round will be made. The remaining picks of the 1st round and all picks all subsequent rounds will be based on fewest combined wins, subject to Anti-Tanking rules, from the previous 2X Period
  • The same franchise may not win the draft lottery in two consecutive drafts
VIII. Roster Management Rules
  • No IR. If you're unable to roster a player on at least one of your two teams, you lose his rights carrying forward
  • You must have at least 20,000 real-life minutes per team; and you must have enough minutes at each position that you won't need to:
    • Play players at positions at which they're less than 95% effective, or
    • Overplay players at their correct positions so that they reach less than 90% effectiveness
  • You must roster roster any player with at least 2,000 minutes played for a given season, unless:
    • The player would not receive minutes in your regular, most-competitive lineup
    • You need to exclude the player to make room for another player you'd otherwise lose the rights to, and there is no other player who can more reasonably be excluded from your roster
    • The player was selected in the current 2X Period's Supplemental Draft
  • Trades are allowed and encouraged.
  • Owners may protest any trades they feel are unfair and damaging to the league. Protests should be made to the Commissioner. The Commissioner will then post a poll, and if a total of 6 owners agree that the trade should be overturned, it will be invalidated.
  • Draft picks can be traded up to three drafts in advance, but with some restrictions:
    • Owners may not trade away consecutive future 1st-round draft picks.
      • Rule clarification: Once the 1977 draft begins, all 1977 draft picks will no longer considered "future" picks. Thus, you could trade a 1979 1st round pick, even if you've already traded your 1977 1st rounder, once the 1977 draft begins. You would not be able to trade both your 1979 and 1981 1st round picks (prior to the start of the 1979 draft), since those would be consecutive future 1st round picks (until the start of the 1979 draft).
    • All owners must maintain at least 2 draft picks for every future draft class. These don't have to be their own franchise's picks, but all franchises must possess at least 2 draft picks in every future draft.
IX. Anti-Tanking Rules

A) Game Strategy

Owners are free to manage their teams as they see fit. However, only losses in which teams do not violate Anti-Tanking rules may be credited as losses for purposes of the draft standings and lottery.

Your team may be credited for a win, regardless of the actual result, for any game in which you:
  • Under-play your best players: Any player defined as a “best player” (see below) must play at least his real-life minutes divided by 82, rounded down, minus 6, in order to not be in violation.
    • Exception 1: If the player played in the previous game and finished at less than 100%, he may be under-played or rested. (“Best players" may not be under-played or rested in consecutive games without being in violation, regardless of their fatigue).
    • Exception 2: Any player who commits at least 3 personal fouls in a game will not be considered “under-played.”
  • Over-play fatigued players: Players at less than 90% may not play more than 6 minutes without causing a violation.
  • Egregiously play players out of position: Players may not play more than 6 minutes at positions at which they’re less than 95% effective.
  • Use a +2 or +3 defense (until further notice)

B) 'Best' Players

Best players are defined as the players any reasonable owner would clearly play if he were trying to win.
  • Best players are required to play at least their real-life minutes divided by 82, rounded down, minus 6 in every game, unless:
    • There is a better player higher on your depth chart, or
    • The player is at less than 100% effectiveness; in which case he may be under-played or rested in non-consecutive games (but never in consecutive games).
    • Exception: Any player who commits 3 or more personal fouls in a game will not be considered "under-played."
  • Only players with 2,000+ minutes will be considered "best" players for these purposes
    • You are free to under-play players with fewer than 2,000 minutes.
    • You are also free to under-play players with 2,000+ minutes if you have players with fewer than 2,000 minutes who are better.
    • Players selected in the Supplemental Draft will not be considered "best" players until the following 2x Period (if applicable)
C) Violations
  • Owners are free to violate these guidelines if they're not concerned with accumulating losses for the draft standings.
  • Violations must be discovered by the Commissioner or any other owner within 10 games of their occurrence.
  • If you notice a violation, you can notify the Commissioner or make a post on the league message board.
  • The Commissioner will rule on violations. Any objections to the Commissioner's ruling will be put to a vote. It will require 7 votes to overturn the Commissioner's decision.
D) Penalties
  • The only penalty for violating these rules is that you may be credited a win (in the draft standings and lottery) for every game in which you violated the rules and lost the game.
E) Exceptions
  • ANYTHING GOES in games against your own team

one of the best progressive concepts I've played in
9/17/2022 7:48 PM
It is a great league concept with great owners. Lots of trading of players and draft picks in the off season. You can tear down and rebuild a franchise quickly. The commish puts a ton of work into this league to make sure it runs smooth.

I can say with all sincerity that it's my favorite league I've been in. Great concept, owners and most importantly a fantastic commish in Zora. I can't recommend this league enough
