Bad contract with options remaining Topic

Any recommendations on getting rid of bad contracts with options? These players are not really tradable, but aren't waivable as they have options remaining. Trying for a full rebuild as I have a bunch of young talented players and would love to cut even more payroll.

No real good choices here. You can put the players on waivers and hope someone claims them or, if they clear waivers, you can release them, but you are still responsible for the remainder of the contract. Also if they clear waivers, you can still keep them on your roster.

Yeah, that’s what I figured. A couple guys have options remaining so it won’t let me waive, am I missing something there?

You should be able to waive them. Are you talking about the popup message that might say they have an overall rating of 70 or above? Just click through that. It is kind of a safety net in case you possibly clicked on the wrong player.

soconnor is correct; it won't let you waive a player with options remaining without also designating him for assignment. You can DFA them, then you might be allowed to reassign them to majors if not claimed. But they'll take a demotion hit if no one claims them.

I just figured the DFA was part of what you were doing. You don't get rid of a player unless you DFA them, which means putting them through waivers.

I agree with drummer, you need to DFA them. Clears the roster spot and maybe you get lucky and someone claims them. If not, may as well stash them in the minors and use them if injuries force you to. I'm guessing there is a season or two left before the option year, if that's the case, that is most likely why you can't release them.

You may find someone to take one of these players on if you add a prospect of value. It's an expensive way to do it but if you're not willing to wait, it's the only way it will happen.

If you wait until after the transaction deadline and they're on the 40 man roster, you should be able to put everyone through waivers, regardless of option status (as this is needed in order to trade anyone). I have some guys with 1-3 option years left on my 40 man who have both cleared and not cleared waivers, so I don't think you should be barred from this either.

True-- but if they have options you have to put them on revokable waivers; you can't just float them. I tried this move in one of my worlds to see if it would work.
