Demotion During Playoffs Topic

Guys don't take demotion hits during the playoffs, correct? To be more specific, I had a September call-up that I'd like to start in AAA next year. I can send him down with no penalty now that the playoffs are underway, right?

You'll be fine as long as he's demoted before the end of spring training next year. At least, this is how I understand it to work. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It is my understanding that players must be sent back down before the end of the season. If you wait until spring training, they will be on you ML roster.

If he's sent down before the end of the season, you'll only have to pay him the minor league salary next season, right???

You can demote when the playoffs start and he'll make minor league money or you can demote before ST games begin. Neither will result in a demotion penalty if he was a roster expansion call-up.

Ah, I'll have to make sure he actually was one, then. The real reason I brought him up was injury, but I think it was after roster expansion.

EDIT: Well, this sucks. I brought him up 3 days before roster expansion. So my best option is to leave him on my ML team, yeah?

Probably. Unless he has high patience, in which case he might not take a hit.

You can demote him before ST next season with no penalty. He'll just make a BL salary.

Ok, cool, thanks.

You say he was brought up b/c of injury? I'm confident that if you made the promotion and you added the ML'er to the DL at the same time, then you can demote the player, without penalty, if it is done in conjunction with removing another ML'er from the DL. Something like that. 'Demotion' has never showed up on the player card when I do it that way.

Mike, are you sure you risk a demotion penalty if the player was not a roster expansion call-up (e.g. - called up pre-All-Star break)? Have you seen someone suffer a penalty in that situation?

I've had a player take a demotion penalty with a playoff demotion when he was not a roster expansion callup. Demotions during playoffs seem to have the same risk as any other time (except pre-season), with the exception of the roster expansion callup thing.

But a demotion prior to the start of ST carries no demotion-risk whatsoever? Regardless of how the player got to the ML?

Yes, please reply to this... if you acquire a player in an offseason trade who has 1 full year of ML experience, does he take a demotion hit for moving him to AAA during spring training?

He may/probably will take a hit during ST, but not before. No player -- even a reigning league MVP -- will take a hit before ST. The cut-off is Rule V draft day, when player movements aren't allowed.
