hitting pitchers Topic

i was wondering if there were any hidden gems out there who can pitch decent and still hit good enough to be at the top of the order. Besides the obvious, Caruthers, Ruth, and Johnson, are there any others people have had success with?

Nothing is hidden from you. You can search by OBP and SLG for pitchers along with whatever else you evaluate pitchers with.

The only thing that is semi-hidden are the pitchers with 40-49 PAs who hit well. Baseball Almanac can take care of that for you.

yeah but when you search by obp and slg you get alot of american league interleague stats before you find any usable figures. and by looking at perf histories, alot of the guys dont hit like their stats indicate

...National Pastime Almanac...

not exactly hidden, Tannehill is popular and Callahan gets some play. I like '28 Grimes and '48 Lemon but they aren't very popular. I've had success with Cooney on a low pitch count and Hickman when spotting him only against low walk teams, both are good pinch hitters. Johnson is the best hitter but only mediocre as a pitcher.

Is there a way to get your pitchers to be the first ones to PH? Specifically the good hitting pitchers?

Try putting some numbers in the search box. It'll blow your mind!

Rest your bench players....not worth it.

I've had good results pinch hitting pitchers but most people who try it don't like giving up their bench. You get some fine pinch hitters without paying for them and your hitters don't fatigue from pinchhitting. on the downside you lose the ability to use defensive replacements and to rest starters in a blowout, and you need to do some maneuvering to keep your pitchers available to PH. only SP will PH and if they're too fatigued between starts they won't be useful.

It's difficult, but you can make SP be a DH as well.

Didn't set out to revive a dead thread, but has anyone else tried a few good hitting pitchers (other than Caruthers).

These came from a recent OL where the team didn't do as well as I'd hoped (79-83 in a division where one team won 100 games and the Wild Card made the WS).

93 Orel Hershiser .384/.402 in 99ab/102pa

84 Rick Rhoden .380/.402 in 108ab/112pa

55 Don Newcombe .278/.375 in 97ab/112pa

75 Bob Forsch .271/.307 in 96ab/101pa

Grand total 400ab (427pa)/132 hits(159 times on base) .330avg .372obp

Team average was .288, league average .286.

Rhoden pitched the best of the group going 18-13 with a 4.08 era, but had a .286 oav and 1.5 whip. Hershiser went 12-12 with a 4.45 era, .280 oav and 1.5 whip.

Shibe Park might have been a bad idea...

anyone else have anything to share?

big hitting pitchers are now overpriced I dont use them anymore except in certain theme leagues. pitchers who hit in the low 200s are reasonably priced. several good older pitchers hit better than mendoza making them better values than those .060 hitters everybody is using.
