Cap Athletic Conf - Red Recruit Rankings Topic

Fellow conference mates and HD enthusiasts…for quite some time I’ve been disappointed in the lack of ability to evaluate our recruiting signings and classes against each other, and against DIII as a whole. Let’s face it, most of us feel strongly (one way or the other) about each player we sign, but how can we REALLY compare signings in order to get a true sense for how well or how poorly we recruited???

Previously in my Gridiron Dynasty life, where they do a phenomenal job of publishing a treasure trove of analysis, one of the most enjoyable parts of recruiting was to see how we fared relative to other schools. I miss that quite a bit.

I am no expert at this game (in fact, I couldn’t be further form it), and therefore have little in the way of qualifications or credentials necessary to take on such a task. None the less, I am going to make a humble effort at doing precisely that. If it goes well and people enjoy it, perhaps it can develop beyond the current crude stage of this first evolution.

First and foremost, let me set the table and establish some initial parameters for the analysis.

1.All categories with the exception of Durability are considered.

2.Signings must have 4 years of eligibility (all others are excluded).

3.Recruits are only considered at their WIS assigned positions (e.g., PG’s are only evaluated as PG’s, though they may be intended to play SG).

4.With the exception of how the rating formula was devised (and evolves), this is purely a quantitative analysis.

5.FT shooting is excluded

6.All players are evaluated purely on their skill ratings. “System fit” is excluded (e.g., how a player fits a M2M system versus a FCP is not feasible)
I realize there are several limitations based on the preceding list. Most of these are due to an inability to perform like comparisons (e.g., how to compare a 4 year recruit to a 2 year recruit) and the current limitations I have extracting data from HD.

I welcome any and all feedback, especially constructive criticism and/or suggestions for improvement. Spirited debate is encouraged.

So without further ado, I present the first seasonal RED RECRUIT RATINGS….

Point Guard and Shooting Guard rankings updated - somehow I didn't pick up a couple Goucher signings. Could be a flaw in the way I'm pulling the data down (though the record counts seem accurate - 166 PG's signed, 166 SG's signed). Let me know if you guys see any other exclusions. As I said before, this is still in the early stages. Hope to post SF ratings tomorrow.

Pretty strong backcourt class for Goucher - #3 PG & #4 SG in the country. Nice work Ty.

Goucher continues it's streak of landing all DIII top 5 recruits. Looks like York landed a very good prospect, and Hood managed to crack the top 20 SF's as well. Pretty good SF class for the CAP.

York manages to sign the highest rated recruit by position thus far, with the #2 rated PF Thomas Davis, but their second PF signing drops off quite a bit. Still a pretty strong showing for Randy thus far. Mary Washington seems comfortably nestled into the 68-78 percentile range. Meanwhile, Galludet drops to a league low (thus far) 51st percentile and -0.37 Red rating for Bonenfant.

We have our first DIII #1 recruit, courtesy of Saint Mary's center Francis Marshall, thanks largely to his big REB number. Goucher rounds out its class with all top 5 DIII recruits - very impressive. Hood, Stevenson and Salisbury all land solid Centers...but Catholic earns the distinction for signing the CAP's worst recruit of season 36 - Scott Mee. I can see what might have appealed to hicksy - decent REB, BLK, LP, good WE, and an intriguingly high PE...but that ATH is alarmingly low.
