"In a five-year contract, no season can comprise more than 25% or less than 10% of the total value of the contract."

Does this include any "bonus" as part of the first season?

No.

I can't wait for tec to expand upon my answer and explain, in detail, how it's misleading.

No, it doesn't include any bonus as part of the first season.

Mike should have more specific.
9/24/2009 1:54 PM
No, just because I want Mike to identify this post as unnecessary.

Could you guys be more specific? A n00b from SLB may not quite understand the answer. Things are different over there and, as evidenced on this board, short answers are just not sufficient.

OK Children! There is milk and cookies on the table for ya's.

So, other than the sentence quoted above, it's pretty clear there are some restrictions on the distribution of money in contracts.

Anyone know what they specifically might be?

From the help link from the page of negotiating with any FA:

"In a two-year contract, neither season can comprise more than 60% of the total value of the contract. In a three-year contract, no season can comprise more than 40% of the total value of the contract. In a four-year contract, no season can comprise more than 30% of the total value of the contract. In a five-year contract, no season can comprise more than 25% or less than 10% of the total value of the contract."

Also true, but not in the help: (1) The bonus doesn't count, so you can use a bonus to front-load a contract, and (2) for a 4-year deal no single season may be worth less than 1/6 of the total value (I worked this out by trial and error).

If you are trying a creative contract for Woolf, don't bother. He's coming back home...

Thanks for this. This is helpful and the sort of thing I was looking for.

Even meeting the rules for 5-year contracts in the Help, I was unable to sign Virgil Mendoza to the contract I wanted to, so I was wondering what other rules kept me from doing so.

Better pay the big bucks for him them. I'll take Jameson on in a salary dump if you need that extra $ to solidify your weak pen.

Didn't have to overpay....thankfully. However, it is the biggest contract I have ever handed out in HBD. Nowhere near the $20 million per (plus "incentives") I thought it was going to take.
