11 NC Games, Positive or Negative? Topic

For the first time in 70 seasons I received an 11th non conference game and I can't help but be upset at getting this cause it could end up costing me a post-season appearance. Other than padding stats I see this as a real disadvantage for a coach to get considering I ended up getting stuck with a 200+ RPI team. I still won but I figure that this game is costing me 3-8 RPI points. Currently sitting @ 85 RPI this very well could cost me in the end. Every win I get in conference play sees me drop a few spots, I've dropped from what was at one point about a 62 RPI over about 14 games - all wins except two losses to Top 15 RPI teams.

Does anyone see an advantage to this 11th game?

The conspiracy theorist in me can't help come out considering I had a heated back-and-forth with CS at the conclusion of last season when I wasn't eligible to move up to D1 in Knight despite meeting all criteria that should allow one to move up to at least a bad D1 school. I was told I was close. Close to me means I just need a PIT appearance. If I end up missing that tourney by 1 or 2 RPI spots because of that 11th game I'm going to be p*sssssed.

Ouch. I wouldn't let conspiracy idea get out of hand though. I've had the 11th game and send nothing but flowers and chocolate to CS.

Which reminds me. One night, many seasons ago, hitting refresh waiting for the scores to show, they came up. And within 2 minutes they went away to be replaced with different scores. I'm sure my conference mates thought I'd lost it, and I wouldn't believe me either, but it DID happen. I'm guessing they had an "issue" and re-ran it. Cue mysterious music.

Obviously Admin lost a big game so he just redid it.

By no means am I conspiracy theory guy, but there are times I have had to talk myself out of letting any of those thoughts creep in. I think I'm just more bitter and venting than anything but still, of all seasons to get a "death" 11th game. I'm going to get a 1st round CT bye as a #2 seed but that 11th game will essentially make it seem like I had to play a bad 1st round team - at least the way it affects my SOS.

I got one this year against a sim that ran the same o/d sets as us and had almost the same RPI and SOS. I lost and was ****** off for about a day and a half.

Ive had an 11th NC game before.. I sent a ticket in because I wasnt sure why.. Every season 2 or 4 teams play that extra NC game... Its no big deal.. If anything, its a positive thing, especially if you win and end up with an 8 or 9 game NC winning schedule

This is only a positive if the team you are playing has a decent RPI. Even if you win you essentially lose if they have a garbage RPI. It's not a huge impact, but it costs you a few RPI points yourself and when post-season comes around you may get out due to your RPI being one spot lower than it should be. Case in Point of why this game is a negative as of right now:

Team A 17-8 RPI 69 SOS 120

Top 150 RPI Wins

25, 18, 42, 122, 120, 142

Losses

33,16,34, 96, 18, 31, 196, 216 AVG of 80

Team B 18-8 RPI 86 SOS 125

Top 100 Wins

52, 89, 105, 119, 121

Losses

24, 63, 206, 88, 33, 8, 4, 4 AVG of 54

Record is virtually the same except for the extra 11th game win against a 215 RPI team. SOS is 5 points apart and you have to assume that one game alone brings the SOS down by 5 points.

Team A has more quality wins at the top but when comparing teams that both teams have lost to Team B has a stronger opponent record in the 8 losses. Team A has 2 ugly losses (196 and 216) Team B has 1 ugly loss (206).

The way I see it these two teams are pretty even. Only, the RPI ranker at this point separates the two by 17 points. Team A is a lock for a PIT, Team B is in the grey area at risk of not making it.

The 11th game (against any bad SIM team) even with a win could cost me a post season appearance and thats not right. Having a bye in the first round of the CT isn't good just for ensuring you make it to the second round but it any league with a lot of bad Sims it also helps ensure you have one less low RPI win to sink your SOS and RPI whereas someone who didn't have a 1st round bye has to play that game and is penalized even more for not securing a top two spot. The 11th game completely cancels out the advantage of finishing in the top two of the conference.

"This is only a positive if the team you are playing has a decent RPI."

How do you figure? Another teams RPI is not taken into account when calculating your teams RPI.

You can assume decent RPI = decent record which = positive impact to your own RPI.

It's representational of that team. You're RPI takes into account your SOS. If you lose to a good team (say top 20 RPI) this isn't going to impact your RPI too negatively and may even increase your RPI if it gives your SOS a big jump. A win against a team like this and it helps considerably. Conversly, a win against a low RPI team (200+) and you are going to see little positive impact, maybe even lose a few points in your RPI for that win. I'm 13-3 in conference play and have only lost to #4, #4 and #8 -everything else wins. And my RPI has dropped 20 points, little by little 3 points for every win against a bad conference foe. A loss against a bad RPI teams and you are going to drop like a rock, 15-20 points even late in the season unless you have a very posititve SOS.
